      Choosing UK newsgroup server

      Hi Guys,

I've just had my sky broadband max wireless modem delevered today and after a while i've managed to got it working, but when i started to look for a skynews group server i read on this forum that there isn't one.

Now i've read some of the other newsgroup servers people here use, but they all seem to be american (they want you to pay in dollars).

Does it matter for the speed what kind of provider you use ?

My previous provider (Fiberworld, i've just moved over from Holland) had a free newsgroup server i could use, but one of my mates had an extra one he'd paid for.

So would you guys recommend any good UK newsgroup server, or doesn't matter from which country it is, so i can choose an USA or either an Dutch one as well then ?

      Kind regards,

      Medic1

Astraweb news do a pay as you go service, works out about 13 quid for 95gb, with no time expiry. Can max out my line.

      Welcome to the site medic1

It doesn't matter what new provider you use to be honest and most if not all the bets ones nowadays have servers all over the world and if you go with one of the ones suggested then your speed should max out your connection I use Astraweb and Gigganews and Newshosting and can Max my line at 1.65M/sec.

I would in your place take Marks advice and go for Astraweb to start with and see how you get on and I would if I was use use a NZB indexing service to find what you want, they make it a lot easier to find stuff the going through a lot of headers.

Some Advice.. Its always advisable to inform your old ISP as soon as you have migrated that you have moved.

      Thanks for the advice everybody.

I did go with Astraweb (the 25 gb pay-as-you-go option to try with) and it's working fine, i'm just curious about your speeds.

At the moment i'm downloading with betwwn 2.5 and 3.5 MBps, however i was wondering if that isn't to low for the type of connection (skybroad band Max) that i've got.

So what are your avarage speeds, and is there a way to speed up the downloads ?

Can you post your router stats and a speed test from Namesco BroadbandMax ADSL Broadband Bandwidth speedtest | Test your ADSL Broadband connection speed

      Re: Choosing UK newsgroup server

      I've got

      - sky broadband max,
      - that white wireless Netgear sky broadband router (product name: 108 MBps Super Wireless ADSL Router)
      - Belkin wireless G+ MIMO usb network adapter.

I've just did that speedtest and got 912 kbps download and 247 kpbs upload, but i am using newsbin at the moment (at 2.6 MBps download speed now) so that might be intervering with the speedtest.

      Oopps, not those stats.

In your web browser type: 192.168.0.1 and then log into your router with:

      Username: admin
      Password: sky

Then click on the stats button/

Also redo the speedtest without any other app using your internet connection.

      Re: Choosing UK newsgroup server

Redid the speedtest without Newsbin on :

      3509 kbps download
      467 kpbs upload

And i was indeed downloading with around 3.5 MBps just a couple of minutes ago.

And do you mean this with the stats test ? :
