Unhappy Bittorrent breakdown - lost in soup of advice

      Hi all,

Apologies in advance for not been able to find the exact advice I'm sure is on this wonderful site already somewhere.

Since I plugged in my sky router my bittorrent downloads have ground to a a near halt. Every few days I do google searchs and find technical advice on how to get to full speed. I've been accessing my router via the netgear site and tinkering away adding rules but nothing is working. I feel like I should reset the mess that I've attemped to set up and start from scratch.

Could somebody please help me by pointing me in the right direction? Also should I use something different to Bittorrent which might work better with my router?

      Regards,

      Mark MCmullen

Downloads are between 1 - 5 kbps ... if that's what you were asking me (!) sorry have a dangerous amount / lack of technical knowledge.

I recently got Sky Connect, no LLU here yet.
Like you I found bit torrent traffic to be throttled, even changing my client to use a different port didn't help, but using encryption did and I now get full downlod speeds.
Whilst that is great, my torrent upload sppeds are non existent so my share ratio is dropping rapidly

Edit: This will only apply to the Connect package, as i didn't realise the OP was on MAX

Mark is on Max, there should be no throttling on there.

      Moved to the correct forum

Have you forwarded the ports on your router and opened them in your firewall?

What bit torrent client are you using?

First gaff is I'm on Sky Connect not Max.

Since I last posted, I've downloaded utorrent and it's giving me speeds up to 20kbps which is much better but still not what I expected.

I haven't yet followed instructionss to forward ports here but when I down loaded utorrent 1.6, I think it told me on a test that ports were already forwarded.

I did (with my limited knowledge) attempt to forward ports but really not sure I did this right and wanted to start from scratch.

I think I'll stick with utorrent now so, bearing in mind I'm on Sky Connect but have only just downloaded ... what should I do next?

In utorrent goto the Options -> Preferences -> Bit Torrent then on the right hand side turn on Protocol Encryption
      See if that helps.
I think they are using packet header sniffing to determine the type of traffic then throttling.
