Will an old Sky SR101 White Hub work with Now TV Brilliant Broadband?

I'm considering switching to Now TV Brilliant Broadband (not fibre).

Does anyone know if an old Sky SR101 Hub (white one) will work with Now TV Brilliant Broadband as I've got an old unused one stuck in my cupboard from when I was with Sky a few years ago?

I need 4 ethernet ports and the NOW TV Hub Two only has 2 ethernet ports which is no good to me.

From what I've read I know the Sky SR102 (black one) will work but will the Sky SR101 (white one) work?

It should do, as you will be on an ADSL connection.

(It will also work on an FTTC connection in conjunction with the old BT supplied HG612 modem - mine did!)

      Thanks for the reply.

I suppose if the Sky SR101 router doesn't work on the NOW TV Brilliant Broadband connection I could always use it as a 4 port switch connected to the NOW TV Hub Two to get the 4 working ethernet ports I need. I could just buy a 4 port switch but I'm just trying to avoid as much messing about and expense as possible and save as much on broadband and phone costs as I can.

You have to wonder at the capabilities of the people in Sky/Now who make the decisions regarding the spec. of the routers they supply. I would bet that not one of them is an end user and probably never has been and deciding to reduce the number of ethernet ports from 4 to 2 in order to save a few pence in manufacturing costs was just a stupid penny pinching decision and seems to be at odds with the 4 ethernet ports provided on routers supplied by the vast majority of other companies.

I (and some others here - including the wonderful Scubbie, who I had the pleasure of meeting at a Sky community superuser open day at Osterley a few years ago) was a beta triallist of the SR101 on my shiny new FTTC connection way back in 2012...

No idea how they decide on specs though! Personally, I’ve always used my own provided switches on the LAN side.

Re: Will an old Sky SR101 White Hub work with Now TV Brilliant Broadband?

If you are being offered a new NowTV router for free, then take it. If they are going to charge you, consider your options. The SR101 should work but without actually plugging one onto a NowTV connection, I can't swear to it. Since NowTV is a part of Sky and the server network is the same, there shouldn't be an issue.

The NowTV black router is more or less the same as the SR102.

The newer routers support 5GHz as well as 2.4GHz channels. A lot of mobiles and tablets support the 5GHz channels and have done for a few years. Many new laptops also support 5GHz channels.

For me, the benefit of using the 5GHz channels is connection speed, particularly between devices at home and fewer other devices competing at the same time for the same frequency. Annoyingly, Sky and several other providers all use the same default 5GHz channel, but since the signal is weaker than the 2.4GHz channel, it isn't such a problem.

Forgot to say, my SR101 worked fine (in conjunction with HG612 modem for FTTC) when we first switched to NOW Broadband FTTC. About a week later, I switched them out and put in their version of the SR102. Now using their latest (NR801?) which is very Sky Q Hub-ish.

Thanks for the replies I will bear the info in mind assuming the market prices are the same or very similar when I come to switch in early March.

Always best to do the groundwork, gather info and prepare a plan in advance.
