Question HP Probook 4320S DVD Drive Problem

Recently the DVD drive(which is a multi-format rewritter) on my HP Probook 4320s has been acting funny, it would say any burnt CD inserted into it is a blank CD. But if I run a burnt DVD through it 1st then put a burnt CD into it would recognize the disc then. Does anybody know whats wrong with the DVD Drive on my HP Probook 4320S?

I've just googled to see if there was something similar elsewhere and it looks like the drive is to blame.

Provided that you are able to get to the screws, it shouldn't be too difficult to swap out the DVD Writer yourself if you are out of warranty.

Try running an optical cleaner disk through it a couple of times. See if that helps. You might also want to check if there are any Firmware updates available for the drive. Probably available from the drive manufacturer if not HP.

Here is a funny thing it was actually recognizing my burnt CDs for a couple of days starting from Tuesday. But now it's not!

I wonder if it's a software conflict? I had to reconfigure PowerISO Virtual Drive manager that day since it had somehow changed the icons for all removable drives connected to the USB port.

Do the CDs work in any other player?

The article I linked to above was suggesting that there is an issue with the DVD Writer that you have.

Yeah, the burnt CDs work fine in my little sister's Toshiba Satellite and my offline HP Probook 4520S.

I was just wondering if it was a software conflict that caused the problem.

Re: HP Probook 4320S DVD Drive Problem

It sounds more likely that it is a hardware issue. In the thread the guy mentioned that it appeared to be related to the DVD Burner model supplied, not so much the Probook.

Since you have another Probook, is it possible to see if you can temporarily swap over the DVD Burner between the two to see what happens?

Yeah, that's what I thought at first too. But as I've mentioned before about reconfiguring PowerISO, which is what led me to think could the issue be a software conflict somehow..

Yeah, I don't think I even want to try that as I have to remove the entire speaker, keyboard, more or less the entire front panel to get to the DVD re-writer and I don't want to risk damaging any of the data ribbon cables.

Re: HP Probook 4320S DVD Drive Problem

It might be worth checking first, but with my Toshiba (HP are always a lot harder to open up) it was a case of removing a couple of screws from underneath. The SATA DVD Writer then simply slides out.

Check out this guide first: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03058629.pdf

Search 'Optical drive' in the guide and it details the process.

Looking at it though, you need to remove the keyboard (described in the same guide) which may concern you. With this in mind it might be safer to find a local repairer.

Re: HP Probook 4320S DVD Drive Problem

I think I would go down the software road first, check for firmware, uninstall PowerISO and all of your burning programmes. Uninstall and reinstall the DVD player, using the Device Manager. If it then works, put back your disk programs one at a time till you find the culprit. If that does not work, then you can look for a hardware solution.
