      'Best DNS' tool

I've no idea wether this sort of thing is old news amongst the computing fraternity, but as i've never heard of such a thing, thought i'd post a link: namebench - Open-source DNS Benchmark Utility - Google Project Hosting

A fellow ps3 user (on virgin media) claims to have used the tool to drastically improve their download times for files on playstation network.

Apparently, this was after the tool recommended bt's dns servers & not the usual 'open' or 'google' ones.

      Re: 'Best DNS' tool

Just tried it and it gives Google for me (8.8.8.8) with BT-8GB as runner up (194.72.9.38). It would be interesting to see what other find.

Dns has nothing to do with your download speed from servers

      Its an address system only
      e.g.
Your pc ask's where does google.com live and the dns server reply's at 8.8.8.1 or whatever

It will make dns resolution faster though ofc
Virgins dns servers are flaky at best

      Re: 'Best DNS' tool

      Glad i ran it now

my dns server had been defaulting to the gateway device which was still setup to use sky's dns servers

Have fixed the dns server and also setup the gateway device

Sky's dns server really are poor

What kind of real-world difference is this likely to make?

      Re: 'Best DNS' tool

when you click on a webpage it will be slightly quicker
due to dns being done that little bit faster

also out of 500 reqests the sky dns server didnt reply to 34 for me
so that would result in the secondary dns server being used
which would be a big delay waiting for the timeout

      Re: 'Best DNS' tool

just used namebench, my initial go was 781% faster than my current unblock-us DNS (used for Netflix US). after putting them back to default (skys) if i changed them they would be 83% faster, which is what I have done.

the fastest for me is BT-8 GB

so changed them for the recommend within my router and leaving the Xbox using unblock-us DNS

DNS *CAN* affect download speeds, it depends on where you are downloading from.

In cases where a CDN (Content delivery network) uses the DNS request to determine which Edge server to route you based on where the DNS query came from it's possible if you're using a DNS server on the other side of the world you could end up getting the content server for that reigon returned instead of a more local one, and thus get slower speeds.

I think this is basically how netflix works and presumably why unblock us is able to work (I.e they resolve Netfix.com to the US cluster)

      Re: 'Best DNS' tool

Another thread prompted me to try this with my SR102. I was a bit surprised and shocked to get this result-

      'Best DNS' tool-outgoing.jpg

This did not happen with my previous router. Anybody else like to try?

Edit What is even stranger I can't find an entry in the Router settings for IPv4 DNS, only IPv6. I am sure they were there before

Edis 2 Scrub this I found the entry for IPv4 but it is not headed as such as IPv6 is, just under the WANIP heading.
