If you have another similar drive (brand/model) you could also switch the controller circuit board to try gain access. Usually attached by a small ribbon cable and a few torx screws. I did this about 4 yrs ago to recover some files at work that the user had stored locally on a client pc that failed.

Ouch. Hope you're sorted by now SatDish. I had an old HDD fail with exactly the same symptoms, a slow click, click, click as it tried to access the bad sectors. Luckily 70% of the disc was still readable and I managed to pull most of the data off. Seems you were unlucky.

I used to make backups on DVD-R too but after about 4 years they're unreadable now, dye has deteriorated apparently, and they were good quality Verbatim discs too. Seems theres no 100% safe method of data storage.

I currently keep all important files on a 2nd internal HDD plus backups of the OS install incase something unpleasant happens. I really ought to have an external USB HDD backup as well to be honest.

      Re: What Backup method/software?

I use Norton Ghost and do daily backups of all partitions to an IDE drive inside a Netgear SC101 SAN device. It's saved my bacon a couple of times!
Files held centrally on the SC101 for access by all machines on the LAN are also copied daily to a second IDE drive in the SC101.

Assume the worst will happen, plan for it, and it probably wont happen. Ignore the risks and it most certainly will happen!

      Re: What Backup method/software?

lol dont know, but to add my 2p to all this,

The best way for me (and my mind) would be to get a Raid1 capable NAS and then store all critical data on there. Even if the hdd fails the 2nd one will kick in and give you chance to replace the failed disk.

The problem with external hdd's is that they are subject tot eh same fate as SATDish's original hdd (Burn outs etc).

Norton ghost is a nice way to go about it, you imagine you have say.....1TB in storage space in your system. Thats a lot of DVD's, so ok you got Blueray, but still thats a lot of Blue ray disks and very expensive also.
