      Hi, I'm Ash. I'm 13.

Now before you say anything, I'd like you to know I've built 3 PCs, set up our home network, AND configured our Belkin router with Sky Broadband. I also know alot about A/V and gaming.

So I'm just an ordinary kid.

      Say Hello

Hi - I got Sky BB for 2 main reasons...

      (a) Cost saving - had Pipex for 3 years and was paying £23.44 per month. It was unccapped but my requests to goto the higher speed, capped package for £10/month were at first encouraged but then ignored so I dumped them.

      (b) The free wireless router - The start of my home wireless network. The kids are at an age where they are wanting laptops and the wife complains about me sitting upstairs all night. This way I can surf and talk to her downstairs.

I ordered online then rang a few days later to check status. I had to get the £17 connect package as our exchange isn't Sky enabled yet. The girl on the phone said I could drop to the £5 package when the exchange is enabled.

After about 2 weeks I noticed my Pipex BB didn't work anymore. The next morning I received an automated (spoken text) message on my BT landline phone advising me that my BB was connected. I got straight onto Sky to see where my router was. I got it 8 days later, just over 3 weeks from ordering to getting online with Sky and a week without internet access in between.

The CD that came in the box would not let me install as I don't have XP SP2 so I had to abort that and do it all manually. This was still easy. All I had to do was enable the LAN/NIC built into the PC motherboard and reset the PC. All the correct network protocols were now installed and I was connected.

I have several domain names and email addresses so I had to add the smtp.sky.com into my mail accounts and choose LAN as the connection type.

That was basically it apart from going throught he router settings and changing the defauld passwords etc as explained in the useful links on this site (set up your wireless)

I did a speed test and was averaging about 5.5mbps. I'm happy with this as I visited several ISP's before going with sky and they all gave me warnings that 8mbps might not be achievable but 5 would be more likely. Its still 5x better than what I had and a lot cheaper!

So far so good - I'm happy

      Re: Say Hello

      Hi there!

32 year old married guy from the Brighton(-ish) area. No kids yet, but my wife's pregnant with our first! Expected on the 8th July.

Joined this forum because we've just gone over to Sky, and I never knew I *had* to use their branded router to get the service. Still, I'm using a DG834G now which I'm quite happy with, so I'm not expecting too many problems... But based on info from this board and others, I'm slightly annoyed to find out that the adsl username/password is unavailable! (Another reason to join this board... finding out the workarounds to get that kind of info!) But still, it'll save us money in the long run, so I'm happy.

Thanks, moderators, owners, and people who generally help out and answer questions, for having a great resource available for bods like me to tap!

      Andy

      Re: Say Hello

HI, I'm a 37 year old ex Bulldogger so it's no migration option for me having to do an RTD then a Reprovide as I couldn't Migrate a fully Unbundled LLU line (MPF), so far the RTD is done (Return To Donor) and I'm now back on Dialup with orange anytime with Sky Max ordered (couldnt have done without any net access for 3 weeks )

weird thing is this tho, I just checked the BT Availiblity checker and it says its highly unlikely my line will support 1Mb thats weird, I was just on 14Mb with bulldog?

Heres hoping for a trouble free install

Anyhoo's If anyone has problems, I'll try to help

My god.. you here now? it's Petecoventry from the BD forums

i'm STILL waiting for my line to be cut off lol

you know yourself you were on LLU and BT can only check their system for ADSl max when they talk about the 1MB issue

on LLU it should be okay again - afterall your the same distance from the exchange you always were - and on the same exchange.

      Re: Say Hello

lol, hey Pete, ltns I got cut off on tuesday after 2 weeks of giving them my 30 days notice (yeah I know 2 weeks dont equate to 30 days, lol, so you guys here at SkyBB can imagine the billing there at Bulldog )

concerning the 1Mb issue, before when I was with Plusnot, I could get 2Mb easily (as confirmed by BTW) and I'm 1.5KM line length so even 8Mb is easily gotten, dunno if BT are upto thier famous ol tricks

/me waits for TriGGa to join SkyBB, lol
