      Hello!
Was very interesting to see that some people love Sky so much that they opened a user forum for us all

I'm a 30(ish) old IT manager. Got one little dude and a lovely wife. Was really against paying for telly when it's available on freeview ... that's got to do with the fact I come from Serbia - we never had to pay for TV and always had all the channels ... not necessarily legal always, I must add! But got a great deal from Sky as I was previously the O2 broadband user. So here I am now! Found the forum thanks for Sky's "great" SMTP policy. But as a techie I am sure I'll be hanging on here learning from more experienced Sky user.

      Re: Say Hello

      Wotcha.

I was an O2 broadband customer, and jumped ship to Sky early. With O2/Be gone, my unbundled choices are Sky or Talk Talk... so I went with the one I'd heard fewer bad things about. (-:

My line's up to speed now, and is measuring pretty much the same as my old connection. Not sure about the Sky Hub; the Thompson router that O2 gave me is much smaller, and really lets me be a control freak. I might set it up for Sky and give it a whirl at some point.

Sky doesn't seem as geek-friendly as O2 was. A shame. No outgoing SMTP relay really came as a bit of a surprise, and being escalated twice before I got support staff who even knew what one was filled me with trepidation. It was that third guy, btw, who told me about this forum. "It's not official, but it's very cool," he said. He was Scottish.

Anyway, I'm settled in now, I suppose. Hopefully I won't be needing much of Sky's support (I actually make a living as an IT technician specialising in networking) and as long as the service stays up I should be fairly easy to please.

One thing I will say, though, is that Sky's turning out a lot less expensive. Can't really grumble about that.

So, within my house is a bit of an IT playground. My network is really over-engineered; three subnets, redundant DHCP servers, multiple WiFi access points, workstations and media centres all over the place... all to meet the strenuous demands of me, my wife and our cat. Some of you will know how easy it is to get carried away like that.

With all this, no television (and no TV license, which the TVLA love to keep pointing out to me). Life's too interesting for that. Besides, I'm usually too busy playing Minecraft.

Welcome to the forum and have fun on Friday. Ensure that you have plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits for the BTO Engineer too, although a cold drink may be required instead judging by the weather.

If you are interested you may wish to add a post to the 'Who's got Fibre' thread:

Thanks scubbie. I will certainly look after him! Lol. Do you know if you definately get a phone call before they turn up at the house as I need to pop back from work. I'm only 5-10 mins away. I will also post up my stats once I'm live too.

      Re: Say Hello

Stay at home or get someone else to stay there if you can.

Whilst they should call, this isn't 100% gauranteed and several have not received a call prior to the engineer arriving. Sometimes the engineers do not get your phone number (land line or mobile) on the work order, so they can't ring if they wanted to.

In my case it was kind of obvious that I was being switched over as the Internet went down. Once I checked the phone, which was also dead, I knew that finally it was happening.
