A standard format will not universally resolve a NTLOADER target virus or worm, only totally flattening the drive, i.e. a low level format would totally remove a boot sector threat.

If you have win xp professional , is the licence for use on 2 pc's or only the one is allowed ? I'm thinking of otherwise getting vista if i cannot instal it on a second machine i shall have shortly.

If Windows XP is an OEM version, ie just a disc and a small pamphlet type thing, the Licence is for one PC for life, so technically if you change the motherboard or the hard drive, then in Microsoft's eyes you would need to buy another copy of it. However in reality they will reactivate it on the same PC.

If the version is a retail copy, IE in a green box and costs about 180 ish, then the licence agreement for that is any PC at any one time for life, ie if you decide to change your PC you can install it on the new one as long as you delete the old one.

ah, i have the OEM version ( , but the reason i asked because on the actual barcode sticky thing attached to the package seemed to mention intallation on ' pc's ' ... plural, but i cannot find said sticker at the moment.
But what you say would make sense really, that it can be installed on one machine if it is OEM . Oh well, vista it is then. Thank you for the confirmation )

It will probably state for installation on new PC's only or installation on a new PC only. Cannot remember - but OEM definitely one machine for life.
