Some of the happiest days of my adult life were when I was working in Havant and Cosham and sitting outside the Pub at the entrance to the Naval Dockyard (amongst others).

And how long will we have been without a carrier when QE comes into service, a lot longer than three years.

By all means build a second carrier, but first give the one you've got some cover. The chances are PoW will just be mothballed anyway and will only be used when QE is out of action for some reason. They have not ordered sufficient aircraft for both ships.

I agree that the fault lies with successive governments. If you and I can see the flawed logic, then why can't they?

Sadly DC waved his evil wand and killed off all three without worrying about the consequences. In the current climate our Police force has been cut. Our Army could fit in Wembley Stadium, leaving plenty of empty seats. The RAF has fewer planes and ground crew to maintain them. The Navy has fewer ships than when Queen Elizabeth was on the throne. That's Queen Elizabeth I, not II.

Currently the Royal Navy is about 710 people short of the maximum number they're allowed. They are having recruitment issues. HMS Ocean was recently decommissioned and is due to be sold. Don't know who to yet, but there are several rumours. One of the new Destroyers has just gone into use as a Training ship as there isn't enough crew for her.

Blame whoever you want to blame. Ultimately we do need to spend money in order to have a safe free life.

So what will happen to our two new carriers? Well for the present time the official line is that one will always be available with 5 days notice. The other will either be also ready or having some kind of maintenance performed.

As to the readiness now, sure HMS Queen Elizabeth doesn't have any fixed wing aircraft, but she could be supplied, armed and off somewhere with a contingent of Marines and/or Army personnel as required. The FAA can muster enough helicopters and flight crew quick enough too.

Not the only thing DC messed up then, but that's another story!

Any RN ship large enough already has a suitable flight deck as standard. Admittedly most are for a single Helicopter, but that's normally enough.

Anything else can easily be retrofitted, like Canberra & QE2 were in '82.

I was aware of that; I was just trying to imagine trawlers with full flight decks!!

An aircraft carrier without aircraft is like a pub with no alcohol: attractive in principle but no damn good to anyone.

I assume if something did kick off then the marines could use OUR Harriers from it. That's if they haven't crashed them all by the time that came to happen.
