This brings back a few memories. I was one of the first people to see the first public sight of a hovercraft when one slid down into the Solent back in the early 60's and took photographs of it (though poor ones on a Box Brownie)

      Re: New Hovercraft at Southsea

The SRN6 was a good craft when it was first launched. It was very popular and helped to pave the way for the passenger we still have today. Sadly one had an accident in March '72 in which 5 people died after she was capsized just 400m from shore.

      SRN6:

There have been two other incidents since then with no further loss of life. In 2011 Solent Express had a prop failure. In 2015 Freedom 90 apparently caught an unidentified object in it's propellers. This destroyed four blades and one of the three rudder blades.

This service continues to be the only regular scheduled ferry service for paying passengers that uses Hovercraft in the world. There have been others, but they are no longer running or are free.

Various military sections around the globe, including the British, US and Russian forces, use Hovercraft. Often for their special forces.
