      Be aware of fraud

In light of the recent issues with TalkTalk and several other incidents of theft of data, Ofcom have today published the following article:

Be aware of fraud | Ofcom
Identity thieves and other fraudsters often pose as representatives of banks, credit card companies, creditors, or government departments to get people to reveal their account numbers and other sensitive information. These criminals use personal details that they have pieced together from various sources such as social media, intercepted correspondence and stolen data to contact victims via phishing emails or vishing phone calls.

With these details they are able to pose as genuine representatives and convince people to share confidential passwords and account details.

You should never be approached by your real bank or building society to send your account details via email or over the phone.

Therefore you should treat any requests of this type with extreme caution.

      What should you do?

Never give out your personal information in response to an incoming call, or rely upon the Caller ID as the sole means of identification, particularly if the caller asks you to carry out an action which might have financial consequences.

If someone does call asking for this information, don't provide it. Instead, hang up and call the phone number on your account statement, in the phone book, or on the company's or government department's website to check whether the call was genuine.

Wait at least five minutes before making the call - this ensures the line has cleared and you're not still speaking to the fraudster or an accomplice.
If you have been targeted by a scam you need to report it as soon as possible.

If debit cards, online banking or cheques are involved in the scam your first step should be to contact your bank or credit card company.

You should also report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or visit Action Fraud . Action Fraud is the UK's national reporting centre for fraud and internet crime.

Comment: Please share with anyone whom you believe may be at risk and get them to post a copy near their telephone and front door.
