Vodafone UK Launch WiFi Calling for Smartphones – No App Required

Vodafone UK Launch WiFi Calling for Smartphones - No App Required - ISPreview UK
Mobile operator Vodafone has today become the latest provider to follow EE (here) by introducing a seamless WiFi calling service, which doesn’t require customers to find and install a fiddly app in order to use. But you do require a Smartphone that can support the feature.

Apparently the solution, which in simple terms harnesses a local WiFi network (e.g. your home network or a public hotspot) instead of the usual 3G or 4G mobile signal in order to make a voice call, is available to any Pay monthly customer on a Vodafone Red Bundle with a compatible handset (you can also call anyone on any network); there is no additional charge to use the service.

Cindy Rose, Vodafone UK Consumer Director, said:

“Our WiFi calling service allows customers to talk to loved ones, friends and colleagues for longer and in many more places. It is easy to use and doesn’t cost a penny more.

It works wherever a customer is connected to WiFi, in a cafι, at home or the office, and automatically connects just like a normal call when a mobile signal is weak or non-existent. Vodafone WiFi Calling is a great match for Vodafone Broadband, our new superfast home broadband offering. Its special beam-forming technology ensures that a strong signal follows your phone wherever you take it around your home.

Vodafone WiFi Calling is one of a series of future voice services we are launching for our customers over the next few months
The service will be rolling out nationwide over the next few weeks, but take note that calling non-geographical numbers (e.g. those starting with 08), International numbers and calls while roaming are not included with WiFi Calling.

What to they mean by roaming? If I was abroad, but connected to a wifi signal would they charge me for that?

What if I set up a VPN on my phone and call via the VPN so it appears I'm at home or have they added something sneaky to the 'compatble handset? It cannot be GPS related, I can turn that off.

I've no idea. Certainly what you are suggesting might work, but they may well have factored that in already.

Of course it would just be a little less complicated if all the mobile providers just scrapped roaming charges altogether.

So a £2,000 bill is acceptable policy then?

Not really ever going to use this myself.
      But much like ee, wifi calling is all about tying you to the company and as a vodafone customer the email we had encouraged the use of vodafone home broadband (whatever that is);

Your handset has to come from EE, as it needs the network's software build installed to enable the Wi-Fi calling feature. If you buy yourself a SIM-free phone from elsewhere for example, sticking an EE SIM card into it won't give you this functionality.

Re: Vodafone UK Launch WiFi Calling for Smartphones – No App Required

In that case they can count me out too. I have two mobile phones, a company one and my own, mine is an HTC One I bought almost two years ago. The contract is almost up and I will not be renewing it or buying a new phone. The phone does all I want and has features I've never used and never will, it has all the bells and whistles and it's a nice metalic red, it was really the colour that sold me.

I am looking forward to going from £41 a month to around £12, I am not even sure I will stay with EE; now that Orange Wednesday is a thing of the past ( we used it quite often ) I see no benefit in remaining with them. All I need now is a provider with a decent 3G/4G network, about a 1Gb a month and 200 minutes, that's it, oh and as cheaply as possible. I dont roam when I am abroad with my phone, I use the company one and if I do use my phone I use Skype and a wifi network.

Soon be time to start looking... Voda and EE can keep thier Wifi calling, I won't be switching Broadband provider soon either.

Re: Vodafone UK Launch WiFi Calling for Smartphones – No App Required

I'm on vodafone payg and pay £10 a month for my personal use (I too have a company deal that uses a prefix and also use business skype), which now offers 4g as standard (you had to pay £20 a month before). I've always bought a sim free phone, so get exactly what I want.
What I like about vodafone is your £10 for calls carries over if you do not use it all, I constantly have about £150 in there for those times when you may need it (been on this deal for sometime).
But £10 is plenty for personal calls really.
This is a data plan, so it gives 300 texts, but rarely use them, but 500mb data (was 250mb, increased for 4g apparently), which is plenty when out and about with a smartphone (Im in app dev, so a lot gets downloaded and updated in the background, so it gets used, but rarely hit 200mb), as free wifi is everywhere these days if you need it, and so easy to use once you get in the swing of using it, especially shops, pubs, businesses, the sky one and the buses and even the beach here has wifi. Only place its a joke is on the trains. I do travel quite a bit and rarely have trouble finding wifi to use.
Vodafone do many free or good deals too, and I recently got 10gb data for 3 months as a quick free yes addon. Been useful for all those speedtests on 4g, LOL!

Nice one... I like the idea of roll over minutes, I thought that had gone the way of the Dodo.
