      There are various areas where such a service would be useful.

      Free WiFi has being rolled out across the London Underground, for example. With these services there is little incentive to roll out 3G or 4G coverage now.

      That is why I said Id probably never find a need for it.
      I find its rare these days to not get a signal across the uk, unless your on dartmoor or the like and I would expect that if there is no signal, then the wifi would be pretty poor too in the majority of occasions.

      Found this for a good background and interesting one around roaming. As well as ip address, it also detects a foreign wifi setup, not sure if that is true;

      How is roaming handled?
      Wi-Fi calling is disabled when you go abroad. EE can detect your IP address and, when you're on a foreign Wi-Fi network, it can disable the service. The main reason for this is that going abroad adds another layer of confusion into the mix. It's possible if your phone were to switch from Wi-Fi to cellular, that you could even get charged twice for a call. When you go on holiday, you're switched back to using standard roaming.
      By the way, its apple that enable the services for ee and vodafone customers iPhones via the apple update releases (there are no carrier updates sent ota, only what apple sends via their update process). It was 8.3 for EE if I remember the release correctly and assume as vodafone say its not till next week that it launches officially that its iOS9 for them that will push it out.
      That is why you always see at the apple events, that certain services will be available with selected carriers in these countries...

      WiFi is indeed on the underground, the stations anyway. I find when I am travelling on it that my phones just about have time to connect to the WiFi before the train moves off again, and the connection is lost, not be particularly useful for holding conversation! On top of that it would be unbearable in the rush hour if the phones did work, hundreds of people all trying to talk loudly into their phones at the same time... Nightmare!

      Never mind WiFi in tube stations, there should be mobile signals down there now in this day and age, at least in the stations. The US networks manage it in pretty much all of their subway stations in all major cities over there.

      I believe there are still a few tube stations that also don't have WiFi as well. Heathrow T5 tube station is one with no WiFi or mobile service as I was there the other week.

      I know there was a plan to roll out mobile signals right across the London underground system before the London Olympics, but the cost was deemed too high so the plan was shelved.
