      But much like ee, wifi calling is all about tying you to the company and as a vodafone customer the email we had encouraged the use of vodafone home broadband (whatever that is);
Your handset has to come from EE, as it needs the network's software build installed to enable the Wi-Fi calling feature. If you buy yourself a SIM-free phone from elsewhere for example, sticking an EE SIM card into it won't give you this functionality.
I bought my iphone from Apple and had a 3 sim in it for 9mths and just switched to EE..... I can happily use the EE wifi calling.

True, an iPhone is different, in the way its updates are distributed and of course is easier to keep up to date.
It's the many android and windows phones that have the enabalement problem, that so much more relies on the carrier and manufacturer for specific firmwares and updates.
That quote is from their ee faq, so assume that's what they meant.

Not ducking far enough there... Android grenade on the way...

What can I say, I had an iPhone1 & 2 & 3... Then someone showed me an android phone and I thought that's total rubbish, that was until he started showing me software like wifi scan and other bits that only a jailbroken iPhone can do.

Now I'm glad to say I'm still only on my second personal android, no need to change it, still does everything an iPhone can... and more as I have pointed out except I do not have Siri, oh dear, never mind.

As for iPads, yes I have one, so does the wife; I also have a an Android Tablet, not one of the cheepos' for 75 but a propper one, I really like it, unfortunatately so does my wife now and I often struggle to get the damn thing back from her.

Horses for courses, I have and do use both, Android, IMHO wins by a neck.

Re: Vodafone UK Launch WiFi Calling for Smartphones No App Required

These types of updates on iPhones come via the network carrier files, which can either be updated at the same time as there's an iOS update or they can come independently at any time. They are now sent over-the-air or via iTunes.

EE simply required this updated carrier file to enable WiFi calling on the iPhone 5C or higher purchased from anywhere. I presume it will be the same for Vodafone.

Also I presume it will be the same in that the current version of WiFi calling doesn't allow hand-off to or from the cellular network so if you are on a call on WiFi and you move out of range of the router, the call drops and it's the same the other way round as well.

This will change once EE & Vodafone both launch VoLTE (calls over 4G) though. WiFi calling and VoLTE use the same back-end tech.

Re: Vodafone UK Launch WiFi Calling for Smartphones No App Required

Whilst I don't know how the vodafone WiFi calling works, I do like the InTouch app on my phone.

I have a perfectly good signal where I live, but I prefer to connect my phone to my router for Internet. This allows me to use the Sky+ app for example.

The InTouch app allows me to decide whether or not to use the WiFi for text & calls, so I disable it at home.

When visiting a friend's home though the signal is pants, so I've allowed it to connect to the WiFi there.

Yes the app is useful, as too should the feature be on Vodafone handsets. The ability to enable or disable it though should be there.

If you happen to be in a country where you'd be charged a lot for using the 3G or 4G Internet, then I would definitely want to be able to use the local WiFi. At the same time the app appears not to allow you to make calls whilst abroad. With this in mind you'll want to set the app to not use that specific WiFi connection.

      Just read this...

Another thing to point out is that EE's Wi-Fi calling is limited to the UK only for now - so you won't be able to take advantage of it when travelling abroad.

      VPN Anyone?

Re: Vodafone UK Launch WiFi Calling for Smartphones No App Required

EE's version of WiFi calling doesn't even work using a VPN abroad - I've tried it. I think it's down to the way mobile network's all tunnel customer's roaming data/calls/texts back to the UK.

I suspect Vodafone's will be the same too, in exactly the same way they block signal box usage outside the UK again to prevent them been used when you are roaming.

Thanks James, that's answered the question.

To me then it would be useless as I rarely seem to be in places with no signal, and if I am there is unlikely to be wifi either.

Re: Vodafone UK Launch WiFi Calling for Smartphones No App Required

I really don't know the WiFi calling system works (other than it uses IMS, the same system VoLTE uses) as I tried it with location services disabled as well...still nothing when I was in the US.

Yet, when I connect to our WiFi network at work here in the UK, where our data centre is based in the US and so an IP look-up always put's me in the US, WiFi calling does work?

When you connect to WiFi, there's an initial delay of a few seconds before WiFi calling kicks in so there's clearly some checks/ authentication occurring.
