There is a lot of talk about the beginning of the Great War at the moment, which started 100 years ago.

The BBC is understandably starting their big commemorations from Monday 4th August as that is when the UK declared war upon Germany.

Sure it all kicked off with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria on 28th June 1914. It had been building up before then and several events happened after that leading to the UK declaring war.

On 1st August 1914 Germany declared war on Russia and the Swiss Army mobilised.

Two days later Germany declared war on France on 3rd August. Britain joined by declaring war upon Germany on 4th August.

The course of the world was forever changed.

The BBC has an entire section dedicated to The Great War, known now as World War 1. It includes a full time-line, interviews and much more.
