Re: Possible forum Hack going on?

Its hard to see what anyone would gain by logging into an ordinary members account, the worst they could do would be to post spam or something abusive, which would be deleted almost as soon as it appeared. If a Founder or Mods account was hacked, that would be more worrying, as we have thread tools which if used maliciously, could cause a lot of problems.

This has been raised. All we can suggest for the present time is to ensure that your passwords are not easy to crack by using a mixture of letters and numbers, perhaps with symbol and mixed case too.

I doubt that they are ding this only to this forum and would strongly recommend to everyone that they ensure that passwords used on other forums are also secure.

      Hi

I have checked the server etc and it appears to be fine, what it looks like is a bot or similar trying to brute force / dictionary attack ie by using a username, and then trying millions of passwords in the hope of finding the correct one.

Obviously the forum has built in safeguards ie for example locks the account out if there are 5 wrong attempts.

All we can do is apologise, and also remind people not to use a generic password for the forum, ie one that is used for say your banking etc

We will continue to monitor etc and report back if we spot anything.

Only other thing I can think of is if successful it could retrieve the email associated with the account and then try the user/email and password combo elsewhere
