Intermittent interruption of sound delivered through optical digital cable but not hdmi

I have an 18 month old 1TB Amstrad 895C Sky+ HD box and for the last 2 weeks or so the sound keeps being intermittently interrupted for a few seconds whilst watching live and recorded tv.
The stb is connected by HDMI cable to the tv (where the speakers are muted) and the digital audio optical output is connected to a external audio system delivering Dolby 5.1 sound.
The current system model indicated is R006.058.60.00P

When I turn up the tv's speakers and turn off the external audio system the sound is perfect.

any ideas why or how to fix it?

Does your sound system have HDMI connectors? With R006 and later there is a setting in the sound menu to output Dolby 5.1 sound over HDMI.

      Using your Sky remote:

      <Services> 0 2

This will access the sound menu. Use the arrow keys to change the setting and <Green> to save it.

      Dear Scubbie, Dear Seawright,

      Thanks for your input.

My Sound System does not have HDMI connections but thinking a bit further maybe I should leave the TV connected by HDMI, carry out the change indicated by Scubbie and simply connect the optical digital cable to the TV's digital audio output and into the Sound System.

I've not tried that yet. I presume the tv should be able to throughput the Dolby sound without loss / corruption.

I was concerned if the problem was software or hardware driven.

      What do you think?

Perhaps I should have asked when you actually experience the sound drops.

Is it during a programme/film or at the beginning/end of the ad breaks?

Unless your TV feeds the 5.1 sound back to the sound system, you will not benefit from the 5.1 sound.

Re: Intermittent interruption of sound delivered through optical digital cable but not hdmi

The interruptions happen irrespective of whether it's live or delayed or recorded. Adverts have no effect that I've noticed although I'd have to check that. How will they cause it?

As I said I'll have to test the DD 5.1 throughput on the TV.

It's funny though that the problem is fairly recent and I sense is becoming more frequent. Has there been a recent software update, do you know?

Re: Intermittent interruption of sound delivered through optical digital cable but not hdmi

It's possible that the sound on adverts is only available in stereo so no sound would be output if there was any delay in switching between DD5.1 and stereo.

Re: Intermittent interruption of sound delivered through optical digital cable but not hdmi

      Dear all,

Tried the connection through television optical audio out and selected a Sky stereo transmission. The stereo sound was fine through optical cable to sound system.

When I selected a Sky dd5.1 transmitting nothing was to be heard heard at all. Conclusion the tv could not throughput the DD5.1

Now I've reset everything to start the intermittent interruption of sound seems to be gone. The only thing I left set to DD5.1 was the sound menu setting for HDMI.

Re: Intermittent interruption of sound delivered through optical digital cable but not hdmi

Has you left the 'Digital Audio Output - Optical' set to Dolby D?

This is how I have mine set up:

You may have a different setting for the 'Audio Delay' at the bottom. This is dependent on your specific setup.
