Olympic Medal count
Just a little food for thought...
Being a small country, compared to many others out there, the UK (or Team GB) tends to collect quite a few medals at each of the summer Olympics.
The worst was at the St Louis where the UK only managed to get one gold and one silver medal. The best was at the following Olympics held in London in 1908 where we managed a total of 146 medal, of which 56 were gold.
In 2000 Australia (the hosts) managed to collect a total of 58 medals including 16 gold. Team GB only secured 28 medals, including 11 gold.
Just now Team GB have a total of 29 medals, of which 14 are gold. Australia have really suffered this time around and are behind New Zealand (13th) and Kazakstan (8th) (who beat our men's cycle team). Currently Australia have a total of 20 medals, one of which is gold.
I know that the next week can change everything, but currently they ain't doing too bad. After a slow start, in the last few days Team GB has jumped from 16th at one point, to 3rd place, behind USA and China.

Re: Olympic Medal count
Its not about the gold medals, its about Jessica Ennis.

Didn't she do well
Another thing that I picked up whilst checking out the details for that first post was that a lot of Americans are watching the BBC coverage over the Internet by using Proxy servers and VPNs. They obviously prefer it to what the NBC is showing.
I'll admit on here (just don't tell anyone else please) that normally I don't watch much of the Olympics. Being able to choose something from the many different channels has made a real difference, as well as the fact that it is all happening on our time, unlike the Chinese and Australian Olympics.

And Vicky P
NBC are getting a slating for their coverage as not only are they showing it with a few hours time delay that are inserting a ton of adverts as per usual. They don't seem to have caught on that most people will stream from other websites and in most cases will know the results because they show the action.
The worst they did was at the opening ceremony and that was the cut out the entire piece dedicated to those people who lost their lives in the 7/7 tubes bombings which we know happened the day after London was awarded the games, again that got a slatting for it.

Well they have an opportunity to learn.
NBC signed up to show this and the next 3 main Olympics (two Winter and another Summer).

Re: Olympic Medal count
Well they'll not have much of an excuse next time around - Rio is only one hour ahead of the east coast. Although the NBC decision has sports fans up in arms, it was done exclusively for commercial reasons - hoping to attract optimum prime-time audiences. Thing is, it probably worked - though it won't have gone down well with anyone in the Olympic community and will surely affect NBC's credentials as a sports broadcaster for any future events.
