      Free firewall suggestions?

Hi there, I'm sure this is the correct place to post this thread.

I currently use Avast and Zonealarm and have run into some issues with Zonealarm recently after a fresh install of my system. I'm looking for an alternative firewall of similar quality to that of Zonealarm. I run Windows XP SP3. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm thinking on just running the standard XP firewall until my parents get their new computer next March time roughly. Cheers in advance.

Comodo do a decent free firewall - Firewall, Personal Firewall Software, Free Internet Fire wall PC- COMODO If you use it make sure you turn off the ineffectual XP one. The Win 7 firewall is good enough on its own when using a router with a built in firewall.

I have done some reading, apparently Online Armour works pretty well in conjunction with Avast 7. I may give it a shot. The firewall is for my parents computer as they run Windows and aren't very computer savy lol.

If you are connected to a router, this is the best firewall you can have, there is no need for additional software clogging up your system.

You have a firewall on your router one isnt needed on your pc's
also if you are that fussed windows 7 has one also which is default on

any firewall you add is just a waste of space

Just setup your router properly and refuse all incoming data apart from specifix ports for servers you run

Here are my firewall rules on my router

      Everything incoming is blocked
      Everything outgoing isnt

if you dont trust your local devices im not sure what to tell you.

      Re: Free firewall suggestions?

I have to agree, with a router, the only good a software firewall can do is to warn you that something has got into your PC which shouldn't be there. With proper care this should not happen. I don't use one myself,(apart from Win7's) but I still think it is a good thing for someone who is not to PC savvy. It at least lets them know that something is wrong and that they have allowed something in which shouldn't be there. For most users it is a waste of resources.

There is no need to, the Sky routers allow all outgoing and block all incoming by default.
