You're more than welcome to take a stroll down the seafront today if you like. Admittedly there is a lot of beaches in this area, but I suspect that they aren't too busy just now. The weather is kind of wet & windy. Of course you could always stop on the Naturist beech near Southsea too.

lol - The photo was taken then other week

There are a number of bases around this area. Perhaps one day I might find out why . I'm not familiar with that one though, but then a few have also closed down over the years all around this area. Of course you could always nip half-way across the Solent and stay in No Man's Land.

Bases? Presumably something Naval given the proximity to "Pompey" and its historic past!

We have them all in this area. From Browndown & Thorney Island for the Army, to HMS Daedalus for the RNAS & Hovercraft to SBS, Royal Marines, WW2 bases (Army & RAF) which have long since been built on or raced around, Roman Forts, Henry VIII reinforcements, to the remains of the UK's Naval fleet.

Goodwood is one of many WW2 Airbases that are now used for other things.

Yes I'm familiar with the area. My Dad was in the Fleet Air Arm when I was a child (Portsmouth was his home port) and "Thing 2" (aka Miss Speedyrite) is at uni there. I have thoughts of retirement to the coast in a few years (maybe)...

No problem. I trust that you daughter knows that is how you refer to her then? Portsmouth & Southsea is full of Uni students. Southsea is quite cheap for them too.

@Justonlang: I've known about the tunnels for a while now. They have served many purposes over the years and are where certain local people would have gone in the event of a nuclear war. There is still a lot of secrecy about them though.

It's one of the ways I refer to her! "The Cat in the Hat" was one of the kids' many favourites back in the days of being read to at bedtime and then learning to read. "Thing 1" is, of course, her elder brother...

Fascinating, I wondered what was up there! I'm going to have to book a weekend visit or two now to come and have a look.

If you were to pop down this weekend there should be one or two servicemen parading around on Sunday.

I think the commemorations were held back because of the Jubilee.
