      STS-133 Space Shuttle Discovery's Final Launch - Tonight 9.50pm

If all goes to plan at 9.50pm tonight the space shuttle Discovery will blast off from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida on its final mission before its officially retired.

Well worth watching if you get chance as after this launch there may only be another 2 launches this year and then thats it forever.

STS-133 is a supply and crew deployment mission to the ISS. They are also taking an experimental humanoid robot astronaut called R2 that will be based on the ISS.

Live feed here - NASA TV

It will also be covered live on BBC News and Sky News.

      A very sad event indeed.

Whilst there have been a few disasters, the Space Shuttle has performed well since it first launched in 1981.

      Thank you for that.

I meant that it was sad to see that it was the last launch of Discovery. It is the end of an era.

I believe that they could have kept them going a few more years, but there is little profit in Space Exploration at the moment.

Ahh, I see. Its like everything they come to the end of their servicable life.
Bit like Concorde, it could also have been kept going for a bit longer, however the costs of keeping an ageing airframe just spiral massively.
Afaik the US government are looking to the private sector to come up with an economical platform.

My younger brother was a massive fan of the Shuttle. I recall watching it flying piggyback after it had been to Stansted Airport, whilst I was on my way to the railway station.

It was huge & flying low.

Re: STS-133 Space Shuttle Discovery's Final Launch - Tonight 9.50pm

I was lucky, in September 1997, when a launch was delayed because the re-scheduled launch was while we were in Florida for a holiday - and it was a night launch

As soon as we heard, we found a coach company that still had room and convinced our daughter that this would be a once in a lifetime opportunity (she wanted to watch the first ever live episode of ER ).

It was amazing - about five miles from the launch with a great view. The night became day as the engines ignited and Atlantis left the tower. Several seconds later the sound reached us, the goose bumps got bigger and the shivers down my spine made it difficult to keep the video camera still.

As Atlantis headed towards the heavens the hundreds of people around us cheered and gave encouraging shouts of 'Go on' and 'Yes'. Then she disappeared into the clouds; the fire from her rockets glowing like a sun through the solid canopy. We all stayed until she was completely out of sight and night had fallen once again.

The coach ride back was long and strangely quiet, maybe people were just tired, or maybe it was because we had just shared an experience that talking about couldn't do justice to.

It was an experience that I'll never forget.

Oh, our daughter enjoyed it too.

I remember watching the first ever one take off, live on TV
