If you want to maintain a usable box then dont bother. I'm afraid the original amstrad boxes do not behave very well with upgraded drives becoming very slow and unreliable.

The new Amstrad's (DRX890's) seem to work pretty well with upgraded drives. The Pace and Thomsons run slower but they work reliably with good drives. The Samsung's can be pretty fussy about the drives they accept but run similarly to the Pace's once you find a good drive.

Re: Can anyone on these forums do HDD upgrades for sky + HD boxes

I upgraded my Thomson HD box about 15 months ago. I fitted a 1TB Samsung HDD and the most time consuming part of the exchange was using Copy+ to move my existing programmes to the new drive - it took overnight! The actual physical swop is very simple and well documented on this site.

After the swap my box runs much faster and smoother especially on FFW. It is a little noisiier but doesn't cause a problem.
