Re: Do we have any installers on here???

      Everything!!!! Lol..

I am a self employed kitchen fitter at the mo, do my own electrics, and am Part P qualified..

Have fitted a few Sky systems for friends and relatives, and ladders/heights are fine.

I have my own tools, apart from a meter and the ladders - And also my own van, not signwritten..

I have heard some good, and a lot of bad about Firstline digital in Chester, indeed one of their subbies broke my splitter and din't let on during a recent box swap, but thats another story..

Anyway, hard work is something I don't mind, but I like to do work I enjoy, and this appeals to me - I am used to dealing with customers, working in peoples house etc..

So... Whats the best way to go at it, from an earnings potential point of view?

      Mike

Try and get in with sky, they will pay for all the training, once trained, try to get on a proper firm as a mate with a view to progressing to a systems engineer.
If you want to pay your own way, the CAI offer a variety of courses, from 2 day basic installer to a year long SMATV distance learning course. Once you have a CAI ticket, you can work for anyone, or yourself.
Basicly, the more certificates you can get, the more chance of earing a decent wage as you will be qualified to work on larger systems and thats were the money is.
Ar our place, we get em in young as a mate, train em up and after a year or so, send em out on thier own.Every job will take em at least 2 hrs for the first month until they get up to speed.
Average earnings for a 6 day week 5-600 on self employed basis. A good week can be 1000 +, bad weeks can be BAD!!!
I personally work 5 days, rarely work later than 3.30pm (9.30am first knockings) and average 4-500pw.

Best place to start is on the CAI website - www.cai.org.uk Get the details of any courses you want, Basic installer is the minimum. Also look into doing the NVQ2 RDI course, youll need a CRB check and basic CAI ticket first.
I'm down south so don't really know of anybody in your neck of the woods. Closest i know would be action aerials in maclesfield, but they won't look at you till you've got 3 years exp.

If you can get into Firstline Digital, they will supply you with all the training and get you up and running, from there on you can look for either a better position or go it alone.

Be warned though, work is scarce for the self employed installer at the moment, if you could get a Sky contract that would be different.

Would have thought it was busy at the mo, as Sky seem to be inundated wth orders for HD??
