Ministers have activated emergency procedures with the oil industry ahead of a threatened four-day strike by tanker drivers, amid fears that filling stations across Britain could start running out of fuel from this *weekend.

Downing Street has urged motorists not to panic-buy petrol and diesel ahead of a planned strike by tanker drivers delivering fuel for Shell on Friday.

Righto then I won't panic (moves towards door, runs to car and rams neighbour in an effort to get to garage first)

      Re: Possible Petrol Srikes

In Scotland a couple of months ago when we had the strike by workers at the Grangemouth Oil Refinery there was panic buying and unfortunately a lot of petrol stations run out of fuel or limited the amount you could buy. There was enough fuel to go round if buyers stuck to their normal pattern but unfortunately there were muppets who were going into the stations and filling up with 5 or so every day. As a result the tankers couldn't supply the stations quickly enough and long queues were the norm.

I do think that the situation was in the majority created by the Media who hyped everything up broadcasting messages that people shouldn't panic buy. Of course everybody did the opposite.

Watching the national news tonight I see the same thing happening again!

      Re: Possible Petrol Srikes

      From our unofficial source.

The Grangemouth Stirke was an isolated strike, blocking one refinery in the UK with an effect felt across Scotland and Northern England, the strike taking place on Friday will affect all Shell petrol stations in the UK.

Media reports for this strike have been released to inform the public what is happening in the hope that panic buying will not occur.
The majority of drivers will copy what Brian69 has said, and will rush out on the days before the strike is due to take place, this will fit with the plans in place as daily deliveries are being made to all filling stations.

The Government has a duty to warn the public on these sort of events, and whilst it might seem alarming that warnings are being released, if nothing was said until Friday things would be in a much worse condition.

It is not believed that stations will run out as they are all being filled up during the week, however Shell stations may see a short fall if over buying takes place.

ACAS is sitting down with Shell and the Haulage companies from Wednesday to try and avert the strike.

We must have went past about 20 petrol stations today and none of them showed signs of panic buying, So hopefully people will be sensible
