Is this simply because I have no calling credit?

Shouldn't be no. If its a new SIM it might taken a while for it to fully activate and propagate itself across the various networks. I'd suggest waiting till tomorrow and then calling o2 to enquire.

If its an O2 pay as you go most likely, I know you cannot make a call unless you have at least 1minute of credit on the phone.

My wife and myself both have O2 phones and they were able to make and recieve calls within minutes.

If you still have problems go back into the store where you got it and I find that O2 are pretty good when it comes with dealing with things like this.

You need to make at least one call to have the SIM register on to the network and "activate". Should have bought a Vodafone, it comes with 1 on to get you started
It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer.
