How stupid are the Inland Revenue?

Two crucial CDs containing 25 million people's personal details have gone missing, the Chancellor has admitted.

The chairman of HM Revenue and Customs Paul Gray has quit as the country's top tax man over the matter.

The Metropolitan Police are "making inquiries" into the blunder and Alistair Darling has made a statement to the Commons.

They went missing after they were sent by TNT courier.

I hear TNT are behind the DG834GT firmware upgrade to be released, as well as the recent Sky email migration!!!

Re: How stupid are the Inland Revenue?

Ever notice in government scandals they always blame "junior members" ... of course the Chancellor who knew about it 10 days ago and told no one, meanwhile he watches over the British pound loosing value and the credit crunch is making life tough, he will no doubt get to keep his "job" ... deserved I'm sure.

Can't say anything like this suprises me any more, companies will no doubt be more accountable to data breaches (I for one would stop using any company that did this) but sadly we don't have that same choice with govs, we have to wait 4 years and play the good old game of "who is the least likely to totally f*ck the nation up", expecting them all to partially f*ck it up.

I've already suffered data breaches like this thanks to the NHS, I don't trust any government to handle this sort of stuff ... especially when the only heads that will roll are "junior members".

I can't believe that in this day and age CDs are still used to hold this data.

Unless they find these and quick this is going to run and run...

Re: How stupid are the Inland Revenue?

This revelation today is absolutely scandalous. Not least the loss of the data itself, but also the slow speed in which the government, banks and public have been told. This data was last seen on the 18th of OCTOBER!!!!

      To quote the BBC...

The data was sent on 18 October and senior management at HMRC were told it was missing on 8 November and the chancellor on 10 November
The banks were told two days after the chancellor.

One good thing to come out about this... there is no chance in hell that people will let our government go ahead with ID cards now.

what i cant get my head around is why this is not properly encrypted, lets say 256bit AES encryption is easy to do with something like truecrypt why dont the do that and then even if someine got it it would not matter

      I didn't know we had a choice.

I can't wait until those DNA records of our kids go missing, I'm sure criminals will have a lot of fun with that ... of course the gov will take appropriate action, fire a junior member who just got the job ... one of them may resign so as not to give the illusion that the gov don't respond to situations like this.

Of cause we do. The current Labour government wants to go ahead with ID cards. As a voter I don't trust the ID card scheme, and I don't trust that our government can act responsibly with our data, therefore I can vote against them in the next general election.

ID cards are going to cost billions, and as proven over the last couple of years, no effect on terrorism which has recently effected this country, which is the excuse they are bringing them in under. The whole scheme is an expensive joke.
