      BSkyB Empire - Broken Down

TV rivals join forces to press Ofcom to end Sky's dominance - Independent Online Edition > Business News

Some of the biggest names in the British television industry have proposed that BSkyB, the satellite broadcaster, be broken up to boost competition.

The Independent on Sunday has learned that Virgin Media, BT Vision - the broadcast arm of BT - Setanta and Top Up TV have suggested the structural separation of BSkyB as a remedy to level the playing field in the pay-TV market.

The four companies made the proposal to Ofcom earlier this year in a joint submission and led the media regulator to open an investigation into the pay-TV sector.

It is believed that the media groups put forward a number of possible solutions to ending what they see as BSkyB's unhealthy dominance. The separation of its content and distribution businesses is among the proposals, which also include other structural and behavioural changes that could be imposed on BSkyB.

Analysts argued yesterday that the wholesale break-up of the satellite broadcaster would be "highly unlikely".

      Two words

      "SORE LOSERS"

All Sky have done, is create a company that is profitable, good value, with great features at a great price. Shame Virgin Media cannot do the same.

Can't wait for the 400K of Virgin Media customers to join us on SkyUser, wow, 410K members, that would be nice.

      :P 420k Members lmao!

I dont really see what Sky is doing wrong.. Is it that the truth is finally getting to Virgin Media, That they arent the only 3-Way Player anymore... Actually thinking of that...

Virgin TV + Virgin Phone (Mobile aswell) + Virgin Broadband = 3Play
BT Vision + BT Phone (BT Mobile) + BT Broadband = 3Play

If they should be split up its all 3 of them!

TBH, Sky have a great product line, Always taking UK forward, Il give you a few examples, Sky HD, A few months after it went mainstream in USA, Sky had a product ready, Where was BBC, Virgin Media..?

They keep on complaining about Lost rights etc ect, Sky have actually done Lost justice getting it and taking it on HD, You can know actually have the same viewer experience as USA customers/viewers at the end of the day, We almost pay the same. With Channel4 we had to wait days to be able to watch Lost after it had already been aired in USA, Not anymore.

Re: BSkyB Empire - Broken Down

This makes me laugh, nobody was moaning when NTL and Telewest went all over the country hoovering up small cable firms (such as our local one which was superb) until there was only the 2 big ones (with some small ones that they didn't want) then the banks forced a meger leaving one, which unfortunately was the most awful one of the lot.

Nobody moaned when BT announced that you had to have BT broadband and a BT Home Hub to get BT vision. (Which is a fairly restrictive requirement)

I am in favour of competition (I got my new HD TV for 200 less because of a price war between Sony Shop and John Lewis) but it ticks me off when the so called competition cannot get into gear and so they go running off to the Government hoping to get a leg up from them.

I notice that Homechoice is being fairly quiet about all this, perhaps that they know that throwing the toys out of the pram won't help any and it makes you seem churlish.

I cannot see how a breakup of BSkyB will actually help them anyways as they will all still be part of News International and so will still buy products and services from within the corporation anyways. (The Tax man has a say in that as if you buy a product or service from an "internal" company that is all VAT exempt anyways.)

Re: BSkyB Empire - Broken Down

Maybe this is why Sky seem to be shifting its various services to Luxemburg (S.A.) registered companies? They would then likely fall outside Ofcoms reach?

Re: BSkyB Empire - Broken Down

Lets remember its ofcom that has decided to sell off the "spare" frequency's after digital switch over meaning there will be no HD service via an aerial. They just want to get their hands on it because the service they provide is a joke compared to Sky.

Re: BSkyB Empire - Broken Down

Looks like Virgin and BT may be heading for an own goal as on the news today Ofcom has stated that they are investigating the whole Broadband/phone/pay TV sector regarding "hidden" charges such as surcharges for people not paying by Direct Debit and early cancelation charges etc. and frankly I think that BT and Virgin are terrible over this sort of thing and so by continually bitching about Sky may see the whole sector for a big shake up.
