BT not happy with sky (dont know if its been posted)

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has rejected a complaint made by BT against BSkyB's "free" broadband campaign last year.

BT complained to watchdogs that Sky falsely advertised its broadband offering as "free", since customers had to pay a 40 connection fee. Sky rolled out the service in summer last year, soon after TalkTalk had caused a rumpus with the first "free" broadband offer. In that case the ASA ruled against the advertiser.

The ASA disagreed with BT's misgivings, and accepted Sky's explanation that its direct marketing campaign was not misleading, since the connection charge was spelled out on the back of the mailing in small print.

I suppose what you can say in Skys favour is that the connection fee is a one off fee and afterwards if you are on the correct pckage your broadband is free. I do see where BT are coming from as adverts like these can be misleading as the advertiser is hardly likely to spell this out in large lettering as this is why a lot of advertising can be put down as misleading as you have to read the small print to see the auctal offer.

Of course Sky Broadband isn't free, it's irrevocably linked to you paying for TV. In Sky's defence, the marketing is little different from TalkTalk's claim to supply free Broadband when that is actually tied into paying 19 per month for the phone. But weren't TalkTalk forced to change their ads ?

At least Sky don't subject many customers to months of waiting for Broadband or (as a friend claims) tell customers that as the phone service is working, they can hardly complain that they haven't got Broadband when it's a "free" extra.

As one who has worked in advertising, even I am shocked at the emergence of "Confusion Marketing", principally by the mobile phone companies and ISPs.

All offer, essentially, the same product -- the main distinction between brands being tarrifs so confusing that they can only be designed to conceal the price -- and the similarity in price between different brands.
