Sky ping and living out in the sticks!
Hello all, ive been slowly reading through all the posts todayafter i stumbled across the site. What a joy to see people with the same problems as me.
Basically i have just moved in with my girlfriend in a non cable area(having previously been very happy with my virgin 10mb connection for 6yrs or so)
Problem is our phone line only allows upto 1.8mbs now so im having to make do with the free sky bb package as i cant even get the faster ones.
Okay heres my problem.
I am pinging 90-130 on online games. i dont really care about download and upload speeds as i dont download much other than the odd song. Now having read through alot of posts about this i know alot of you are saying ring sky r.e Max_delays and they will sort it out. My only concern is that becuase i am on the free package will they be less likely to help me? if i could i would be on the top package but sadly i live pretty much in the country at the moment.
Also i will post my router info and perform a speed test when i get home in an hour and let you know the outcome.
Also before anyone says 100 ping is okay for UPTO 1.8MBS i did hget a 25ping with telewest on their 512kb service so im confused as too why sky is just so slow.
Please let me know if you think they will fix this for me if i nag them enough or indeed if you think i wont be able to better my ping due to it being the basic free sky package.
Many Thanks in advance
Jamie

Re: Sky ping and living out in the sticks!
2 totally different technologies in use TW cable/ fibre optic versus very old copper cable strung up out in the weather getting covered in bird muck. Speed is dependant on many things so posting stats is a must, ping times can be addressed by getting through to CST or using the kana form to ask to have your profile adjusted a certain way.

Re: Sky ping and living out in the sticks!
First off although you line can only support 1.8 meg/sec you can still take the mid or max product as they offer other things such as increased usage limits and better upload speeds.
For gaming currently the upload speed is extremely important as your console/PC does an awful lot of work on behalf of the game server and you need to be able to get that data back as quick as you can otherwise you could see some real latency issues.
Also gaming can use a fair bit of bandwidth up, games such as World of Warcraft etc have a bandwith base line of 25megabytes an hour and that could eat fairly quickly into the Base products 2gig/month allocation.
As for the ping Sky seem to have a real issue with that and the only real solution they have is to reduce the max delays, and it doesn't mater if you are on the base product if you ask them you should be able to get it dropped, although bear in mind that reducing the max delays can make the line much more unstable and could make your gaming experience a lot worse.
post your detailed stats from your router on here and one of the tech people could have a look at them in case you have a problem with your house wiring (very common) and that you may find that some of your issues could be resolved quite easily before contacting Sky.I'm a PC, and Windows 7 Backup saved my sanity when BitDefender imploded !!!
