XBOX 360 Media Streaming
Hi all, first time posting and at the end of my tether so hoping someone can help me!
I am trying to setup media sharing between my pc and my xbox using the xbox wireless adapter. I can connect to the internet all right as i have done updates and can connect to xbox live but in the media settings it fails for pc selection.
Im running Vista home Premium and if i try to connect with Windows Media Centre (having all ready got the 8 digit pin from the xbox) it cant find the Extender! But my PC can see the XBOX and media sharing is setup.
I have followed all the available guides, im running Norton Internet Security 2008 and have made sure all the specified ports are open (infact i turned off the Firewall just to make sure this wasn't blockin it). Then i thought it must be the router so i went in and created Firewall Rules for the specified ports and still no joy!
Has anyone on here had any problems setting up media sharing, or have they had problems with the router (i could find no info regarding needing to create firewall rules, should i need too???)
Any help much appreciated!!!
Cheers, Rob.

Re: XBOX 360 Media Streaming
I'm not sure about Vista as I refuse to use it myself, but it would be easier to just stream all your media through Windows Media Player 11.

Re: XBOX 360 Media Streaming
Try Tversity Media server.
http://tversity.com/home
Its freeware and brilliant. Ihave Vista 64 premium and all is well. Read the help file in order to set up your shared folders, but its straightforward enough.
Streaming via Vista Media Center is pretty tricky if it wont do it the first time. This usually happens if you have altered any files by a cleanup either registry or crap cleaner..my way is easier
If you wanna troubleshoot the Media Center setup have a look at this:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...48b641033.mspx
Also have you turned off Windows Firewall? And go into the network and sharing center.
Check your workgroup is set as a "private network" and turn on media sharing.
If its set as a "public network" it could be your problem.
Hope you get it working one way or another.Last edited by coolchris; 25-06-08 at 01:54 PM.

Re: XBOX 360 Media Streaming
The media center is slow and clunky and it doesn't even support the latest updates from Microsoft, ie it doesn't do DivX files where media player 11 does.
I'd suggest to use media center 11 it was fairly easy to setup and it is a lot faster.I'm a PC, and Windows 7 Backup saved my sanity when BitDefender imploded !!!

Re: XBOX 360 Media Streaming
Thanks for the suggestions will try them out, just annoying that i can't get WMC to connect even if it is rubbish id like to have tried it and then switched
.
To be honest im not enjoying Vista at all, got a new PC and couldn't choose XP, well tempted to start over again and create a dual boot, we'll have to see.
Cheers, Rob.

Re: XBOX 360 Media Streaming
To set it up just follow these steps;
1. Make sure your xbox is turned on and connected to your router.
2. In Windows Media Player, click Library, Media Sharing.
3. Select Share my media, OK. Windows Media Player will search for devices on your network.
4. Click your console, then click Allow. If you want to apply more options, click Settings. When done, click OK.
5. On your Xbox 360 console, in the Media area of the Xbox Dashboard, select Music, Pictures, or Video.
6. If your PC's content is not displayed, press X and select your PC.
Hope this helps you mate.

Re: XBOX 360 Media Streaming
Apparantly hes already gone through all that and it wont work, as stated in his first post, thats why I suggested the alternative media server.

Re: XBOX 360 Media Streaming
No he hasn't, he tried to connect with media center which is notoriously fiddly. You need to get a validation code and all sorts. With WMP11 it takes 2 minutes to set up.

Re: XBOX 360 Media Streaming
Erm...He said "Media Sharing is set up", therefore WMP11 is already set up for sharing..thats the app that shares the directories by default! I have also asked him to check that he has his network set to "Private Network" instead of "Public Network" as that can cause problems with sharing as well. Its Public by default, so it needs to be changed to Private.

Re: XBOX 360 Media Streaming
Just to confirm Media sharing is setup and private network was selected from the begining.
As a further update managed to get a lend of a long enough ethernet cable and hard wired my Xbox to my PC and WMC found the extender and my xbox found all my media files, so it looks like the router is to blame, at least i have it narrowed down!!
