Help with PS3 connecting!!!
first of all, I'll let you appreciate the Irony of a Sky Broadband techie asking for help getting something connected to our box...........finished laughing? good, now on to the help.
I bought a ps3 a couple of months ago, and I had it connected via ethernet cable to my box. No probs there. But due to a re-arrangement and a move of equipment, I now require that I go wireless.
Now I can enter the details into the PS3, network name and key, that goes OK. It says that it connects, i.e. gets an IP address, but when I try to do a system update, it comes up with DNS error.
I tried entering the DNS settings, no luck, I tried manually assigning IP on the PS3, no luck, I assigned a specific IP to the PS3 within the router, specific to the PS3 Mac Address, still no luck.
basically, nothing is working, but apparently it is connecting to the box.
So any assistance would be mucho appreciato, perhaps a full guide to setting it up.

Re: Help with PS3 connecting!!!
A quick google search found a surprising number of people having ps3 DNS problems. One solution I found for a guy with a Netgear router was to reboot the router while the ps3 is switched off, leave all the settings on automatic.
EDIT: Wait 5 mins before turning ps3 back on after reboot.

Re: Help with PS3 connecting!!!
Right, well somehow it seems to be sort of connecting now, but the problem now is that I am downloading a system update, its been running for 5mins and done 3%, whereas I downloaded it on my computer, and it took 5 mins total. Bit of a difference.
if this is the speed I can expect on wireless, Im going back to ethernet. Or getting another router (but dont tell the bosses that)

Re: Help with PS3 connecting!!!
hey, laugh on my friend, laugh on. Its pathetic some of the stuff we arent allowed to help with at Sky, and tbh, If they would just get their fingers out and do some proper research on troubleshooting, Sky would have the best c/s available.
I have it connected now, but Its going really slow. Its taken about 15 mins to download 11% of a 100meg update, which I downloaded in 5 mins total on my PC. I got the speed up by changing the wireless channel, seems to ahve stabilised it a bit.
It doesnt help that you cant forward all the ports necessary for connecting fully. the router blocks off ports 80 and 443, which is kinda understandable, but does make it awkward.
Looks like I will be locating a gigabit switch and a long cable, *sigh* oh the hassle....at least my broadband max is free. Thats my only consolation.

Re: Help with PS3 connecting!!!
reminds of that song
"things, can only get better" (on advert a big finger could point to a sky box with a firmware update on)
mabey they could put that in some new advertising
(as you say, if they do the final bits on the router, they will have the last laugh)Links

Re: Help with PS3 connecting!!!
I had to move my router about a bit to get decent speeds wirelessly, at least you can use the ps3 browser to check at speedtest.net to see whee works best.

Re: Help with PS3 connecting!!!
I must be one of the lucky ones.I had no problems setting my ps3 up with sky broadband using the usual modem they supplied.I also have a psp connected as well and all working fine.I find the ps3 downloads a lot quicker than any pc.The ps3 is connected wireless and i still get good speeds even with 3 pcs online (which are also wireless )
