2 weeks after max delays reduced.......
I had my Max delays reduced 3 weeks ago, pings went from 60ms to 30ms. Brilliant.
But I came back off holiday the other day to find my pings have crept back up to 50ms. I have noticed from my detailed router stats that I have gone from ADSL2+ to G.DMT........I have not changed my setup in anyway whatsoever. Its looks like Sky tech have switched my line, I'm assuming this is what has increased my ping?
Before:
/usr/sbin/adslctl: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: Showtime Channel: FAST, Upstream rate = 765 Kbps, Downstream rate = 7496 Kbps
Link Power State: L0
Mode: ADSL2+
Channel: Fast
Trellis: ON
Line Status: No Defect
Training Status: Showtime
Down Up
SNR (dB): 6.9 8.5
Attn(dB): 42.0 24.6
Pwr(dBm): 1.5 12.4
Max(Kbps): 7696 1020
Rate (Kbps): 7496 765
After:
/usr/sbin/adslctl: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: Showtime Channel: INTR, Upstream rate = 608 Kbps, Downstream rate = 6304 Kbps
Link Power State: L0
Mode: G.DMT
Channel: Interleave
Trellis: ON
Line Status: No Defect
Training Status: Showtime
Down Up
SNR (dB): 12.1 13.0
Attn(dB): 39.0 25.0
Pwr(dBm): 19.8 3.4
Max(Kbps): 8256 1248
Rate (Kbps): 6304 60
Thoughts?
Also I have read on another forum that reducing the interleaving depth greatly improves ping time too, anyone know anything of this?

Re: 2 weeks after max delays reduced.......
You were also originally on Fastpath, but now on Interleave. The Tier 3 guys probably switched you off the fastpath and made some adjustments.
Thing is, you shouldnt be receiving less speed on Interleave, you should technically be able to receive more.
I'd phone up and get it sorted, go under a slow connection thing and it'll get sorted fine.
And if at all poss, call after 1am, thats when its all Scottish guys dealing with the calls, and the Tier 3 are at their best

Re: 2 weeks after max delays reduced.......
The Tier 3 women only changed my max delays, I took the 1st line stats after this was done. It was great for 2 weeks, then bam, pings had gone up by 20 so I took the second reading. It seems that they have changed the line over in the last week by there own accord.
I thought all of sky bb was interleave and it was a router fault that read it as "Fast" - I'm sure I read that somewhere, maybe I'm wrong

Re: 2 weeks after max delays reduced.......
no-one is on Fast path - its a known bug in the router along with the 15.5 bug....
well, thats a lie - some ARE on fastpath but get changed once found...
and reducing the interleve is reducing the max delays-------------------------------------------

Re: 2 weeks after max delays reduced.......
Being pedantic, interleave has two parameters: delay and depth.
Delay defines the mapping between subsequent input bytes and their placement in the bit stream at the interleave output. Depth defines the number of bits (or bytes) in each block of data.
Delay and depth are inter-related. The higher the delay, the greater the depth. Also worth noting is that the higher the depth the more protection against impulse noise. So, reduce delay and you reduce depth which increases the likelihood of noise issues (mainly CRC errors).

Re: 2 weeks after max delays reduced.......
Wel a stroppy email did it, recieved a call today from a tier 3 representative, he has switched it back to ADSL2+ and reduced something 4 (got for a bit technical when I asked him to explain) and a couple of other things.....
I booted up the pc tonight and pinged bbc.co.uk and it is now pinging at 19ms!!!!! Awsome!!!!!!
So it has gone from: 62ms (original),
to 32ms (Max delays reduced to 8),
to 52(switched to G.DMT, delays must have been increased in the switch?)
and now at 19ms (Back on ADSL2+ and I can only assume the delays are now at 4?)
I had a latency of 10 at one stage tonight on a server....I am very very happy!
My pings are now better than most people I play with!
