freesat still available with no sky card

On investigating whether i could use my old sky digibox without a card in a holiday house i've just bought , i found much conflicting advice.
The house had an existing sky dish but the terrestial aerial was in the loft and no use.
So i was pleasantly surprised when i plugged the digibox in and immediately got the FREE TO AIR channels via the electronic programme guide. I expected at the least to have to add the channels individually from system set up.
Only channel 5 is missing , as i expected.
I have stuck an ancient French telecom card [first card i could find] in the box at startup and have not had the nerve to remove it as everything is going so well.
Is this likely to remain so or will the digibox try to update its software to thwart me?

I don't think you need a card for all the channels that are available, only the encrypted ones. There are very few of these now. You can find out more on Sam's site - Sky Freesat channel list

Any Sky Digibox, when connected to a dish pointing at the correct satellite, will find the default transponder and download the full EPG. You don't need any card in the box to allow access to FTA channels. If you happen to be outside the range of the default transponder (say in S Spain) then changing the default transponder to one you can receive (ie the Sky News transponder is an example) will allow you to download a limited EPG which shows all the channels but only for the next 24 hours. It is unlikely Sky will issue new firmware for very old Sky boxes.
