Question I want to downgrade to freesat ?

I am currently a sky + subscriber. I read a google thread which came to this forum about freesat. It appears all you need do is inform sky on line that you want freesat and you pay 20 as a one off.

My only concern is you no longer get sky + for recording. Can you pay to get this to work or what is the cheapest similar solution ? Any ideas ?

      Thanks.

Yes you can pay 10.25 a month and sky will activate the recording facility on your viewing card.

If you have a Sky subscription, the card will continue to work as freesat after you end the sub, there is no need to pay 20. That applies only if you have never had a Sky sub for the box. eg, if you buy a box on eBay and want to use it for freesat.

Re: I want to downgrade to freesat ?

I am going to look at some free-sat boxes which do live pause and record rather than pay 10 a month for this. If I get a new box for this purpose does this mean I will have to re-subscribe to freesat after all ?

      Thanks!

Keep the Sky Viewing Card. Some Freesat boxes make use of this and enable other channels (or at lease have done in the past).

The Humax Foxsat is perhaps the best available one at present. I appreciate that it isn't cheap, but there are some which have the built in hard drive and also they have a few hidden features too.

Re: I want to downgrade to freesat ?

Hi thanks for that I shall bear it in mind. Does this mean I need to be careful which freesat box I get so its compatible with the sky card and also so the box can offer the wider range of free channels sky offers on a downgrade.

I am looking for the cheapest freesat box which does live pause and records as sky + would. Live pause is less essential and not a priority.

      Thanks again.

Re: I want to downgrade to freesat ?

I don't know the specifics of which STBs make use of the Sky viewing card, but since you already have one, it wouldn't matter. The card does not need to be current.

The best idea that I can make then is for you to look at the reviews and search various on-line forums to see which Freesat STB would best suit your requirements.

Which published a report earlier this year, so I would also recommend that you take a look at their website.

You do not need a card with a freesat box. It is completely free. There are boxes with slots which allow you to access TopupTV. This is a subscription service giving you extra channels, but it is not really necessary unless you want access to the particular channels- read more here -

The Humax PVR-9150T is a good bit cheaper than the top model and comes with some good reviews -

The Humax 9150T is for Freeview not Freesat. Like all PVR's it won't accept any external input other than it's built in tuners so it can't be linked to any satellite box.

Freesat is simply an EPG. If you buy a satellite box labelled Freesat it will use their EPG which makes it easy to access channels. However it isn't any different to the Sky EPG in that Sky not only allows access to Freesat channels but a whole host of other channels.

Freesat from Sky is a different product to either Freesat or Sky. Freesat from Sky allows access to the Freesat channels that are all FTA and a limited number of FTV channels (encrypted but free to view with a Sky card - your old Sky card used at the moment will do when the subscription is ended).

Whichever method you choose it will entail some investment. If you want a Freesat PVR it will cost you 250. Or you can keep your Sky PVR and pay 10/month for the PVR facility. So it's the same over 2 years but you don't have to find the 250 upfront with your existing Sky box.

If you decide to pay the 10/month it's worth thinking about the small extra cost of taking out the most basic of Sky subscriptions which will give you the PVR and some extra channels. Only you can decide which is the best for you.

If you only want SD channels and record facilities then Freeview by a terrestrial antenna may be the best solution especially as Freeview PVR's are much cheaper than Freesat PVR's.

      Lots to think about!
