      PVR with FreeSat

Right, so I have FreeSat, but now I want a digital HDD recorder to hook up to it. What do I need to make this happen? I appreciate I won't be able to watch anything else while recording, but do I need to be aware of any other pitfalls?

Can anyone recommend a suitable PVR to use in conjunction with a FreeSat?

      Many thanks.

No such animal, Sky+ box is the only game in town. 10 a month I think if you only have Freesat from Sky.
Otherwise any DVD/HDDrecorder will do connected via the scart.
Best to get one with a Freeview tuner to future proof yourself, also check for DV and analog inputs so you can transfer analog programs and DV camcorder output to disk .

      Re: PVR with FreeSat

Wow, okay that's a bit more expensive than I thought. Is there not a simple digital video recorder on the market I can hook up to the Sky box? There are numerous FreeView PVR machines available such as the rather wonderful Humax PVR9200TB.

Sadly FreeView is non-existent here, as is cable... oh and we can't receive Channel 5 either. But anyway, I'm going off topic now, I just want something I can hook up to the Sky box that will let me record straight to a HDD and save me the hassle of organising tapes and give me a better picture quality too. Why Sky feel they have to charge for Sky+ is beyond my comprehension once you own the equipment. If it can be done on FreeView why do Sky users have to pay for the service?

I use a TiVo with my Sky box - when suitably modded allows connection to a PC to download programmes, and allows web access to set recordings etc over the internet. See the UK forum on TiVo Community or http://uk.tivo.com/

      Hi

Well I use an old PC and SageTV to record, I like it because it send everything out over the LAN so my son can pick it up on the pc in his bedroom.

      Re: PVR with FreeSat

Agree about the Humax, I had the previous version the 8000T, still going strong in the family.
Its not possible to directly record the digital stream from a Sky box, as there is no digital output.
You wont notice much degradation with the D-A, A-D codecs between the boxes.
I use a Panasonic DMR EZ-25, DVD recorder with my Sky+ box to dump recorded progammes I want to keep onto disk. It has a freeview tuner and HDMI upscaling output, even and SD card interface, its been superceeded now so I guess what you want is something like this:

      Panasonic DMR-EX77 video from CNET.co.uk
      Amazon.co.uk: Panasonic DMR-EX77EB-K - 160GB Hard Drive DVD Recorder - With 1080P Up-Conversion & Freeview - Black: Electronics & Photo

I realise you are not in a freeview area yet but eventually you will be hopefully.

Whoops just noticed this one does not have an analogue tuner, but it does have analog inputs via scart, and phonos.
