      Bournemouth Airshow 2014

Well I had a bit of a busy weekend and I've been trying to catch up since. I've still lots to do, but I've gone through some of the pictures that I took at the air show and a few from a friend. Below are some of them.

At Eastbourne I went for a lot of pics, knowing that I could edit them after. This time I didn't quite take as many shots (~2,200 compared to ~3,300) but hopefully the extra practise at Eastbourne has paid off for Bournemouth.

I'll post some more later, but I wonder if you can guess what plane this one is...

Only 2,200 pics! What were you doing all day?

      Re: Bournemouth Airshow 2014

Soaking up the sun, chatting and sharpening my scythe! Although we pitched up very near to the high tide mark, some people insisted on standing in front of us. I guess some of them got upset when the tide came in a second time!

      ...sorry, I shouldn't laugh

Anyway, now I've had a little something to eat, here are some more pics...

I found out the name of the British Lancaster now. It is called 'Thumper'. Sadly the Canadian Lancaster (Vera) had an engine problem on Friday so didn't manage to make an appearance at either the Bournemouth or Shoreham Air Shows. She is flying once more though, so if you are planning to see her, she should be there.

The Dakota was present again. If got some really nice shots last time so didn't take as many this time around. However I did manage to catch the crew member who was waving from the rear door this time. Last time the shot wasn't properly focused.

Missed the question about the Vulcan pic at the end of your first post, but I have no idea what it is!

It's a pity that the weather wasn't as clear as last time, though it probably helped a bit with the exposure.

Love the pics of the B-17

Have you considered uploading them to Flickr or similar so that we can see them all (or those you are prepared to post)?

      Some more for you...

As you can see from these pictures, the weather on Saturday was overcast. I was worried because it could be too low. Thankfully it was just about right and the displays were all able to do their best. The Spitfire display didn't happen. I missed the announcement that gave the reason.

The Royal Marines did their 'beech landing' demonstration a short distance from where we had pitched ourselves. They came in from RFA Argus and were supported by a variety of Naval craft, including HMS Westminster (not pictured).

      Bournemouth Airshow 2014-p1110498-tweaked.jpgBournemouth Airshow 2014-p1110684-tweaked.jpgBournemouth Airshow 2014-p1130527-tweaked-reduced.jpg

As the tide turned, I was able to take a picture of both sides of Argus, who was at anchor.

One of the Red Arrow crew (#3) got a phone call from his wife 2 hours before they were due to put on the display. She had just gone into labour, so they were a man down on the day. This makes for a slightly lopsided appearance for some of the formations, but they were still very good and nice to see. I'll need to post some more in another post as there are a few. I've also played around with the pics this time to bring out the colours. I hope you all like what I have done...

      Re: Bournemouth Airshow 2014

lol - I guess it was a little easy. Yes it was the Avro Vulcan. Whilst Emma, one of the friends with me, had seen it before, sadly I hadn't, so this was a first for me.

Any way, first the remainder of the Red Arrow pictures...

      Bournemouth Airshow 2014-p1130593-tweaked-crop-reduce.jpgBournemouth Airshow 2014-p1130593-tweaked.jpgBournemouth Airshow 2014-p1130665-tweaked-crop-reduce.jpgBournemouth Airshow 2014-p1130661-tweaked-crop-reduced.jpg

      Emma took these pictures:

      Lancaster & Avro Vulcan

I've not gone through hers in full, but those two caught my eye.

So I guess you'd like to see more pictures of the Avro Vulcan Bomber...

I have a few more, but for me these were the better pictures.

A little away from Bournemouth, on Monday I took the picture below from Portchester Castle of Portsmouth Harbour.

I'm reluctant to post the pictures in full at the moment. The pictures above, except the two by Emma, are all my copyright. If people wish to use them for personal usage, then I have no issues with that.

I am aware that a newspaper did pinch a photo posted on this forum by someone else in the past. Not only did the paper never ask for consent to publish it, they failed to acknowledge the person who took it and pay them anything. This is theft and does not do the professional photographers who work for the press any favours.

In all the above photos where 'reduce' or 'reduced' is in the name I have had to shrink the picture in order to upload it. If someone would like a full size image, please send me a PM.

      Re: Bournemouth Airshow 2014

Some cracking pics there. I especially like the 3rd Red Arrows pic and the Vulcan pics (without the PA system!).

In April 1982 I went on a gliding week holiday in Lincolnshire with my then girlfriend (now my wife). On one of her flights they saw from the air (as did we from the ground) a Vulcan passing by, which took avoiding action (it really wasn't close; the pilot was just being careful). I remember one of the instructors saying that the change of course probably cost about a grand in fuel. Perhaps it was that cost that caused their retirement from RAF service.

      Re: Bournemouth Airshow 2014

      Thank you.

I was pleased with the couple of pics with the Red Arrows passing each other. The elongated shape in the second picture is purely from the effect of the camera's CCD and down to me tracking the other plane.

The 4th picture of the Red Arrows has two very close to one another.

I was trying to get the whites of the eyes of some of the pilots. Annoyingly some were wearing helmets, so I had no chance .

Most of the pictures were taken with my 45-200mm lens. The first picture of Argus was taken with the 500mm lens. Double the figures to get the equivelent of a 35mm camera.

Using PSPX7 the 'Local Tone Mapping' has helped to bring out the definition. One unwanted side-effect though is to sometimes change the colours. This is most noticeable in the vertical split in '520'. I've tried to play with that one again this morning, but the colours come out similar. I'm sure with a little more time I can get it looking better, but I'll leave it for now.

Of course having the zoom lens on meant that when the Red Arrows did their 'Heart', I couldn't take the picture. However Emma managed to get it nicely. I've played with it a little and converted it the B&W as this brings out the shape so much better...

      Re: Bournemouth Airshow 2014

This morning the wife and I went to look at a roof (don't ask!). We decided to stop for a pint and a sarnie at a Thames-side pub/hotel on the way back and sat outside under a large umbrella. While eating we were idly watching a helicopter floating around. It looked like a naval Lynx with all sorts of bulges all over it and I rather wondered what it was doing - there aren't many U-boats in the Thames these days. After a while it drifted off and so we went back to our lunch. Then there was a huge roar and the Red Arrows shot over at low level trailing smoke! We watched them for what seemed at least 10 mins and their display seemed to be centred only a mile or so away. The cloud base was fairly low so they had to do a horizontal rather than vertical bomb-burst during the display. Eventually they pootled off, so we paid up and left. I didn't have a camera with me and hadn't even bothered to bring my phone.

There were no signs anywhere advertising a show or their display, so I looked up their programme on their web-site. Apparently it was a display for a Great Ormond Street Hospital fund-raiser, which they do every year. If my poor old brain remembers, I'll check the date next year and watch again.

      Re: Bournemouth Airshow 2014

Check this page: RAF Red Arrows - Display dates and venues

I googled it some time back. I trust that they'll post the same sort of information next year too. The page doesn't include things like when HMS QE was launched or the fly past for the NATO summit. However you can look at the shorter notice link for their transit times. That can often give away other information as to where they might be.
