      Farewell Ark Royal...

I've been quiet on the forums today as I managed to get to Southsea to see off the Ark on her final voyage.

For those who don't already know, it'll be a 2 month voyage to Turkey.

Here she is passing The Round Tower for the last time.

The Government's new aerial detachment provide a fly past as the Ark continues to be towed out of Portsmouth Harbour and passes Haslar, the site of the last military hospital in the UK.

A sad sight indeed especially as the Royal Navy will not have the capability to operate fixed wing aircraft any more during this decade. What message does this send out to other countries that may have hostile intentions towards the UK.

      Re: Farewell Ark Royal...

It is sad that UK is now without aircraft carrier support and will have to depend on France in an emergency for years to come. What happens if the Falklands flares up again, will France put their carriers in range of the missiles it supplies to Argentina? I think not.

It is even sadder that this symbol of Britain's armed might has to be towed to Turkey to be dismantled. Surely the Government could have subsidised a British yard to carry out the demolition! I remember HMS Bulwark in the breakers yard at Cairnryan, it was sad, but it did provide British jobs, Turkey is not even an EU partner.

When I saw it in Portsmouth on the News this morning, I did not think you would pass up a great photo opportunity Scubbie.

It was very sad and memorable too.

I have been watching the local new and shipping movement for a few weeks to see when she would be taken away.

Hopefully some of the pictures I have taken have done her justice, which is far more than someone else did for her.

As you so correctly say, if something like the Falklands were to flare up next week, you could guarantee that they would remain in foreign hands. Even if the French were to support our forces, would the Politicians & Diplomats have to give in and let the other country keep the territory, even if the locals had held a referendum to remain British?

I also took some pictures of HMS Diamond which set sail around half an hour before Ark Royal left:

Nice one too. It is a pity you did not have weather we did up here today, bright sunshine and above 20o. Just under 90o in the greenhouse, working in the garden I was even tempted to take off my thermals.

The forecast was for potential rain. Thankfully it stayed dry.

It would have been nicer if it had been sunny. I took these the other week from the same spot:

She may be now, but until a few years ago she had the ability to wreck havoc anywhere around the world if required.

Ships become the home of the sailors who serve on-board. They mean a great deal more than 'just a lump of metal' might otherwise suggest.

      Re: Farewell Ark Royal...

I do not think that those who make decisions such as scrapping the Ark Royal early have any concept of shame.

This has left the UK without a means to defend territories independently of any other nation should some foreign power decide to take it upon themselves to claim a piece of land which they, rightly or wrongly, believe is theirs.

I am sure that Cristina Kirchner is watching the passage of Ark Royal to Turkey with joy and planning her next step. Even John Lewis believe that it is a sure thing and accidently released their new stock a little early.
