      Save HOW MUCH???

Following on from the eletricity monitor thread... http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/sky-n...tml#post212536

When I got my "Owl" last year, I was on a bit of a mission to save electricity... But we have slipped in our house... And I was brought back down to earth with a bump when the electricity bill landed on the mat yesterday!!

Anyway - As AJ (my 12 month old son) had me up at his usual 05:45am this morning... I decided to do some sums and "tweaking" lol

I have changed 2 things, and seen an immediate decrease in electricity usage of 205w or, in money terms, at my current tarrif price of just under 0.12 per kwh - 0.025 per hour.. Now based on 18 hours usage (yes thats pretty much how long the TV is on for every day in our house... I work days, OH works nights and we do have 5 children..) That equates to:

      Savings of:

      0.44 per day
      3.10 per week
161.18 per year!! (figures rounded to nearest 0.01)

And how have I achieved this??

First, I turned the "power saving" on my 50" Samsung plasma from OFF to HIGH - The reduction in screen brightness was minimal, and no one else has noticed it so far... This saves 160w!! I kid you not - So hopefully it will give off a fair bit less heat too!

Secondly, I turned the speed control on my central heating circ pump from max to mid - Reducing the noise of the CH system, AND saving a further 45w!!

      Try it...

      Simples

      Mike

You know this is something I need to get into. We are a family of 4 adults. The kids aged 21 and 24 still at home. Each have in their rooms a computer. wide screen LCD flat panel TV. Plus numerous electrical items like SKY plus box each. I pod docks Mobile phones and fans. Not forgetting DVD players.
My and the wife have a computer each and Large LCD wide-screen tv Sky + HD dvd home theatre, No wonder our electric is sky high. Going to get a energy monitor just to show how much it all cost to run....

We have the new smart meters and as it reads the meter every 30 mins you can see what is being used and when as we get the usage data readable online.

We already had moved over to low energy lightbulbs and done everything we could to keep our bills down (like buy energy efficient weashing machine and tumble)

So now even with the 32 inch LCD and PC on our useage isn't that great. The big energy hogs are the Electric oven, the tumble, the washing machine and the dishwasher. (no surprises)

But as I am on the smart meter we have a tiered prices, our electricty is half price from 00:30 to 07:30 so now the dishwasher, tumble and washing machine go on overnight.

So far we have already saved about 30% on the electrity bill.
I'm a PC, and Windows 7 Backup saved my sanity when BitDefender imploded !!!

Likewise, we have no "normal" light bulbs at all - even in the cooker hood!!

Our annual spent last year on elec was just on 720, which for a fairly large 5 bed detached, with 5 kids, 1 dog and a Bio processor in the garage... Wasn't too bad - Still shocked at the cost of running the TV though!

      Re: Save HOW MUCH???

We will be giving some Sky Electricity Meters away very soon to some members here on SkyUser, kindly donated by Sky.

Hopefully with those members then documenting how much their electricity usage was and then after using the meter to make them aware of their actual usage, the steps taken to reduce their usage and subsequent savings.

      More news to follow soon.

Can I have one please? I want to show the KIDS ( 21 and 24) that the power consumption of their bedroom electrical s is a bit more than a few pennies.
