re: what is the difference between matt emulsion and undercoat?

Emulsion is water based and Undercoat is oil based so Undercoat will stick better to what ever you are painting

also with Emulsion you can clean your brush with water

Undercoat you have to use turps to clean your brush

Undercoat is mainly use before you put gloss paint over the top so Undercoat is a base coat.

you would get a better finnish using Undercoat

if you use Emulsion and then gloss the chances are the paint could start peeling off.

      so Undercoat then Gloss

Paul are you using bare wood if so you will need to prime it first then undercoat and then gloss

if its old wood been painted already just use undercoat and gloss.

A little sandpapering before painting will help the coats you put on to key.

re: what is the difference between matt emulsion and undercoat?

Undercoat is just a lower spec verson of gloss paint and is used because it's cheaper. If you are repainting a sound gloss surface then you could simply put more gloss on top after you've cleaned off any grease - you should always clean the surface before painting it.

Personally I put emulsion on new wood, then gloss on that. Primer/Undercoat/Gloss seems rather overkill to me when the emulson does the primer/undercoat job just as well.

Use the all in one gloss.

re: what is the difference between matt emulsion and undercoat?

If you want a high grade, long lasting finish then emulsion as primer/undercoat just won't hack it as a water based emulsion won't seal or bind properly to bare wood or offer a good base to a traditional gloss finish.

Primer Undercoat Gloss is the proper way to do things NOT Emulsion on bare new wood

If you want a proper job do it properly don't use cowboy tips

if its for your own home do it properly don't skimp

if its for someone else and you are trying to make a few quid and they are not about use undercoat and gloss mixed.

Don't forget to sand paper after each coat.
