Sky to launch music file-sharing service?

"There are high hopes for a raft of expected new legal services from
internet service providers (ISPs), which would see an all-you-can-eat
music service offered as part of a broadband, TV and phone package.
A couple have launched in Europe and BSkyB is expected to be
the first to launch in the UK."

Re: Sky to launch music file-sharing service?

Amazon do an excellent legal MP3 download service, with albums starting at 3 and in 320kbps quality.

I was paying 15 a month with Napster, for DRM'ed MP3s and today rang them to cancel as Datz.com the Online Music Store is only 99.99 a year for unlimited DRM free MP3s, free to keep, even when your subscription finishes.

Napster gave me a free month to re-evaluate their service, as a gesture of goodwill not to cancel my account, saving me 15 - which I promptly spent at Amazon on the new Kylie Album and Blondie's Greatest Hits, DRM free and mine to keep forever.

So unless Sky come in very cheap and DRM free, they ain't gonna drum up that much interest.

      Datz good.

I suggest BSkyB call their service:
      SkyPirates

ISPs are planning this new kind of legal service with the music industry.
I wonder if this is connected to the warning letters going out?

And the reason why they are DRM free is that they know that it takes about 20 secs for a user who knows what they are doing to getting it removed from the track. ( I can think of 3 ways how I could do it on my PC with my software)

And to the others they just get annoyed by it.

Even Microsoft has had to rethink their DRM on the Xbox, if you have to swap Xboxes you can move the DRM onto the new one.

Re: Sky to launch music file-sharing service?

I take you can't just select the whole of the site on datz.com and download it all?

might have to take a look at that and see if they do talking books.

Yep I see the skytunes.com is owned by British Sky Broadcasting Group Plc

wonder how much the owner of skytunes.co.uk will sell domain to sky for ?

      or .net .org .......?

Although I saw figures in this weeks new Scientist that in 2008 1.4 billion tracks were sold compared to 40 billion tracks illegally file shared.

As NewsReader said they are going to have to be cheap just to compete with their competitors, let alone combat the illegal copying.
