As many local councils are now storeing the stuff because there is no longer any market for much recycleable material, I doubt that local gov has any idea what to do with it, they are scared stiff of the fines which are to come if they do not reduce landfill, they have wasted too much money proping up re-cycling schemes which would not exist without gov subsidy.
My solution is to burn the lot in purpose built incenerators and use the heat for public buildings or the generation of electricity.

Can be isn't the same as will be

Local councils have an appalling record for recycling with some sending 90% of collected recyclables to landfill or incineration.

Strange how some councils will recycle certain stuff and other won't.

Not really an option for you but manufactures need to address this issue much more.

Supermarkets are getting worse on stuff that does not need all that extra packaging. My sister got band from tesco for leaving all the extra packaging on their customer service desk. lol

What an interesting thread, I'm sure there are millions of people in the same position and I can see this happening to the DVD in x amount of years too.

      Thanks Butterfly.

At least with DVDs you can easily get 100 on a spindle
and they are easy to break up.

Just returned from the Recycling Centre.
They DO have a special bin for cassettes but its a
      wheelie bin that's overflowing.
A surly guy told me to leave my FIVE bags next to it.
Luckily I had used the heavy duty plastic bags to transport them.

The PDSA in Stevenage town center (near cash converters) were taking them and selling them last time I went in.

Re: 100 Old VCR tapes. What to do with them?

Hve you joined your local freecycle group? You can offer stuff on there to others who might be able to use it. You could offer them on there and ask if anyone is interested in some or all of them. Some people will be glad to come and take them off your hands. Freecycle is a bit like ebay, except everything is given or taken free of charge to stop things going to landfill.
