The Voice UK 'to leave the BBC' after fifth series

The Voice UK 'to leave the BBC' after fifth series - BBC News
The next series of The Voice UK will be the last to be broadcast on the BBC, after it was "poached by another broadcaster", the corporation says.

Mark Linsey, acting director of BBC Television, said in a statement that it "wouldn't get into a bidding war or pay inflated prices to keep the show".
The next series, which begins in January, will be the fifth to be shown by the BBC.

The show's new broadcaster has not yet been confirmed.

Mr Linsey said: "The BBC is incredibly proud of The Voice, but the fifth series which starts in January will be our last.

"We always said we wouldn't get into a bidding war or pay inflated prices to keep the show, and it's testament to how the BBC has built the programme up - and established it into a mainstay of the Saturday night schedule - that another broadcaster has poached it."

      Funding politics

Last month the BBC said it had made a "final" bid to keep the show for two more years.

Boy George, Paloma Faith will join will.i.am and Ricky Wilson on the judging panel for the next series.

The show is currently made for BBC One by production companies Talpa and Wall to Wall. ITV bought Talpa for £355m earlier this year.

The Voice was singled out in a consultation paper published by the government, ahead of the BBC's charter renewal, as a format that is "similar to ITV's X Factor", and which was bought in from overseas rather than being developed in-house.

Culture Secretary John Whittingdale has questioned whether such shows are "distinctive" enough from those aired by commercial rivals.

In August, the BBC's director of television Danny Cohen - who is leaving his role at the end of November - defended the corporation's right to air entertainment shows like The Voice.

      Good riddance
Never watched it, but from what I saw of trailers and mentions sounded awful and not something that the BBC should be bidding for.

Not any more and even he was unhappy about the short notice he got from the BBC that his contract wasn't being renewed. The BBC do a good job of shooting themselves in the foot without help from other broadcasters.

Sadly, Sir Tom was less than thrilled with the news, and he took to Facebook to complain that he’d been given just 24 hours’ notice about his departure, after four years with the show.

The BBC has refused to pay 'an inflated price' for the show amid a review of the way it spends licence-fee payers' money

The Saturday night singing competition The Voice is leaving the BBC and going to ITV.

Mark Linsey, acting director of BBC Television, confirmed today that the fifth series of the show, which starts in January will be the last one to be shown on the channel. The corporation did make a bid to retain the rights to the series, it is understood, but walked away from the process when ITV offered “substantially more” money...

So along with X factor ITV will now have two white elephants for grown up people to avoid.

The Beeb is better off without such gimmicky trash.

What Tom Jones was doing on it I have no idea, surely it wasn't for the money?

Don't forget that ITV also has BGT. Another show I tend to avoid.

Can't believe they got rid of Tom Jones for Boy George and now after all that Itv have bought it talk about shoot yourself in the foot is an understatement things are going from bad to worse with the BBC about time they got rid of it
So we can all save ourselves some money each year just stick the BBC in a Sky package with all the other channels.

Re: The Voice UK 'to leave the BBC' after fifth series

If only it were that easy to just add bbc to a sky package, but not seeing that ver happening.
Mind, we watch little BBC and having just watched some awful acting (Capaldi) and script writing that beggars belief from Doctor Who. Almost tempted to finally give up with that, having watched it since the late 60s religiously.
Probably one of the very few progs we do watch on the beeb, say a few quiz shows and eastenders occasionally for some light relief.
But do think reality is not what should be on their channels.

Did Tom Jones sing on it then, no idea as its not the sort of prog I would ever think of watching. Cant say I am any kind of fan of his. Is Boy George still around LOL.

Re: The Voice UK 'to leave the BBC' after fifth series

I gave up on Dr Who ages ago.

      The scripts are appalling.

It seems to have become a head up ****, ego tripping contest between the writers.
