      Re: Subtitles Too Big

There is unfortunately no further control for the subtitles than to either enable or disable them.

I am sure that someone will have determined just how large, proportion wise, the subtitles should be on a TV screen. This way they'll be readable on both large and smaller TVs.

Whilst I don't need to use them, I do periodically make use of them and they don't seem over sized to myself.

Is there a specific programme/film that was causing a problem?

If so do you happen to have any details of it or perhaps could you post a screen shot?

      Re: Subtitles Too Big

I am using a Samsung Smart TV 48" honestly the size is ridiculous, sometimes there are 3 or 4 lines of text because the font size is increased so much so it covers half the screen. It doesn't happen on smaller TV's. There are other people also complaining of the same issue on other non Sky forums but I can't find a solution. It's on all TV Shows and Films from the TV guide, there is no subtitles on most of the catch up TV and even rented films (disappointing). I will send a screen shot in a little while, thanks for your response.

I've tried tweaking all the settings on my TV and on Sky options for picture size (and other related settings I thought might affect) but it made no difference.. Just to let you know.

Hmm... I have an option on my LG to set the subtitle font size, it is hidden away though.

      Re: Subtitles Too Big

Ok I too have a Samsung TV. I normally have the screen size set to 'Screen Fit' as the 16:9 actually crops the edges a little.

What I shall do is to raise this to see if there is something that can be done at a later date.

      Re: Subtitles Too Big

I have a samsung and they fit very well. Ive seen/tried and tested on many other TVs and none are to the extent you are describing.
Be nice to see a screen shot of what you are seeing and what channels?
Agree they are larger than you would see on your samsung tv for the integrated freeview/freesat sources.
The skybox has provided them at the larger size for sometime.
Have not seen four lines of subtitles and never seen it get anywhere near half the screen.
For some channels, like sky sports news and sporting events, the subtitles move to the top of the screen, as they can overlay the bottom sports info bars.

Did hear some time ago it was mentioned there was a compromise for when viewing in clubs and pubs that they should be slightly larger, but took that with a pinch of salt

You could also contact the sky accessibility team with your concerns accessiblecustomerservice@bskyb.com or https://accessibility.sky.com/contact-us

Here is what they look like on sky news hd, sports news hq hd and universal hd on my samsung TV.

As you can see if the face is ugly it doesn't matter as much It's really annoying because if I could just decrease the font size by half it would be fine.. It can be worse than this too when it has two people's dialogue in the same frame!

Thank you Scubbie that would be great. Really appreciate the help. I don't seem to have 'Screen Fit' as an option just picture format 16:9 and 4:3 and 4:3L same for RF2 Picture Format. Where is the 'Screen Fit' setting located? Thanks

      No problem.

'Screen fit' is shown on both my newer TV and the older one.

I don't get it on the HDMI that is used to connect my computer or Laptop, but I do get the option on the HDMI port used for Sky. With that in mind I have set up the names of the ports to show what is connected to them. This may be of help.

The option isn't available with the TV's tuners. Instead I use 'Auto wide' for Freeview & Freesat.

I've also gone back and looked at the my TV's subtitles when watching Freeview. They are much smaller and less imposing than Sky's. I'm not sure which would be more popular with the deaf community, but this has been raised with the people at Sky and is being discussed.

If it is taken on board, then it is very unlikely that there would be a change before Easter next year. This is based upon how they've rolled out the firmware updates over the past few years. It could be a lot longer as someone will be prioritising any changes and someone else will need to implement them. The updated firmware will then need to be tested internally before it goes to the beta test. I would also expect various groups who represent the deaf community to be consulted too.
