Re: connection to telephone line problems..
Sound like you have hit your lines REN limit... every device has a REN value and the total recommended for a single line is only REN 4....
On some households with older cabling they can really struggle at REN 2 or 3.... SKY+ = 1 + SKY+ = 1 + Plus DSL = 1 + telephones =? = 4+ so that may be your issue..
Technical Stuff on Ringer Equiv Number
Each piece of telephone equipment has a Ringer Equivalence Number or REN. This number represents the loading a telephone ringer has on a phone line (loading is used to minimize amplitude distortion). Each piece of phone equipment on your line contributes to the total REN value. A BT phone line has a maximum REN value of 4, and If this total is exceeded, you may have problems with your service (e.g. phones not ringing or a reduced broadband speed). Most phones have a REN of 1 or less - this information may be printed on the equipment itself or may be detailed in the equipment manual/specification.

Re: connection to telephone line problems..
The REN measurement is not very useful as for example a DECT phone might have a REN of 1 it in fact has no ringer as such as the ring ins powered by the power supply and batteries in the handset. The result being that the actual REN of the phone is more like 0.05. You will know when you have exceeded the REN as some phones will struggle to ring properly.
It is highly unlikely that anyone will exceed the REN of 4 with modern telephone equipment as modern phones have no traditional ringer or a very low power electronic sounder.adslnation

Re: connection to telephone line problems..
fair point... however it was just something to look out for... 2 x modems on the Sky boxes and the dsl modem and an unknown number of phones (it was never stated if they were DECT or hard phones anyways)....
no need to shoot people down for ideas.. sometimes even the way out ones could hold the key
