      BT Old Style Bt Box

Hi there, i have done a lot of reading on improving speeds by removing the "ring wire" (orange/white cable) from point 3 and 4.

I have tried this but i cannot get connection to the internet after removing the ring wire from point 3 and 4. the blue and white cables are still connected to point 2 and 5.

Also for some reason i got a green and white cable that is not connected to anything, some guides say that this should be connected to point 1 and 6 but it was never connected so i dont want to connect it in case it causes a fault to my line.

My line details are as follows, i think i should be able to get connection upto 14mb.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6888 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 30.0 db 18.5 db
Noise Margin 7.1 db 9.0 db

Thanks in advance for any help.

Its 2 and 5 you need for the line - nothing else - try that and see if you get the internet back

Orange/White was only used for the ring signal on old phones and to provide ring signal to external devices like bells etc. White/Orange was never used by BT.

Is it possible you've disturbed the connections on 2 & 5 and by chance when you connected pin 3 & 4 you've disturbed them again making them contact with the contacts?

Here's a good overview of UK (POTS) wiring.

Re: BT Old Style Bt Box

      Update

i have disconnected the orange and white cable from point 3 and 4 again and made sure point 2 and 5 were connected properly.
Now i am connected to the internet without any problems and with speed improvements. Here are my stats

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8096 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 29.0 db 19.5 db
Noise Margin 12.1 db 14.0 db

I dont know if the noise margin begin higher is better or not??

Also will a new faceplate with filter be of any benifit to me now and if yes what do you reccommend?

      Thanks for your help again

If you can test the test socket and compare the stats to what you are getting now, then if improved may be worth buying one.
