That's right - you can't replace your master socket yourself.
However, it's perfectly legal to fit a new NTE5, disconnect any extensions to the old master socket, remake them to the new NTE5 and then connect the old master socket to the new NTE5.

That wouldn't eliminate noise issues would it though? Think i could get BT to come around and replace my master with a NTE5 as my master is soo old?

Although BT may state that it is illegal to change your master socket, official BT master sockets can be obtained from eBay.
BT will only be able to tell if it has been done yourself if it is not an official BT NTE5 socket. Or i suppose the fitting and cabling inside the unit is done very badly
