      I think the wire going into the top of box X is the incoming cable. This is the one you have to check. It has Brown, Blue, Green and Orange wires, with the first 2 being the 'live'. These can be solid or braided.

      This is the plate you want - BT NTE-2005 ADSL Faceplate for NTE5, 6 Way Version Don't be tempted by cheapos on eBay, they just don't have the quality.

      IDC tool can be found here Professional IDC Tool. Re: the ADSL faceplate, I personally would go for the latest version which is VDSL compatible.

      Quick question regarding the VDSL faceplate - if you're using this do you just use the standard faceplate on the front to cover the insides?

      It fits between the existing faceplate and the body of the socket, so no wires need changing unless you want a non filtered extension.

      Or you are upgrading from the older type filtered faceplate. Of course that relies on people having kept the original lower front half of the NTE5!!
