Your extension should wire from that faceplate? 2 & 5 from the downstairs faceplate to A & B on the upstairs NTE5. No faceplate or plug in filter required upstairs!

I understand now. Ok I have repositioned wires 2 and 5 downstairs and now the sky box upstairs is saying "line busy".

No it is not. The wire which is attached to the faceplate is going to your upstairs socket, unless you have another socket somewhere. That wire is only connected to 1 terminal. I am not familiar with that particular faceplate but it looks like it has been connected to the wrong terminals. Connect the blue white and white blue to the 2 and 5 terminals, not the A-B terminals and your upstair socket should work properly. Use a thin plastic credit card to push the wires into the terminals, if you do not have the proper tool. Do not use a screwdriver or you will damage the connections and do not strip the insulation from the wire,

Sorry got called away while posting.

Try swapping the wires over, put the blue where you have the white and vice versa.

Line busy will be as above, 5 going to 2 at one end etc. Swap them over. If you plug a phone in as it is you find it will be ring continuously.....

Re: My filtered faceplate does not fit. Can anyone help ?

I thought the end of each wire had to be exposed to get a proper connection.
Sorry, when you say swap the wires over, do you mean upstairs or downstairs ?

....and sorry for so many questions. I wish I had never started this and just left the cabling alone

Either end will do, as long as they are both the same, with 2 running to 2 and 5 running to 5.

I rewired both ends making sure the insulated part of the wire (and not the exposed metal on the end) are in the right slots but I am now getting "line not connected" again.

I have sorted it now. I rewired it again making sure the metal was making the connections and not the insulated part. Works ok now.

Thanks for all of your help particularly Isitme and RunItDirect
