Re: New build house, no NTE5

Well, my broadband was activated last night & here are my stats from my office phone socket:

      Code:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 512 kbps
      Line Attenuation 32.5db 21.5db
      Noise Margin 17.3db 14.0db
When I plug in the router in the under-stairs cupboard (which I'm fairly sure is the first in the loop), the stats all the same except the upstream noise is 13.0db.

What kind of speed am I likely to see from this once it settles? I've seen a couple of posts mention there's a tool on this site which will tell me, but I can't find a link.

There is a small blue line above this thread. In this is a button called 'Tools', click that, then the next page has the tool that you were looking for (#3).

SkyUser - Potential ADSL2 Line Speed Checker & Calculator

This gives an indication that you should expect 12mb to 14mb, but this figure will be based on inaccurate information. Your current stats indicate that your line is currently on ADSL, not ADSL2+. It will switch over soon. When it does your Line Attenuation will jump up a little.

I can't say for certain what it will rise to in your instance, but the result could mean that you potential speed could be 9Mb.

Also your stated that you noise margin dropped in the cupboard under the stairs, it actually would be helpful to see the whole of your router stats as they show more of a pattern. So if you could reconnect your router there and take a snapshot of the figures it would be very useful.

More stats in addition to the ones I posted above, or the same set for the different connection? I didn't post the rest, as they were identical except for the 1db difference in upstream noise.

No problem. Quite often though members on here spot something that new people often miss, which is why I asked.

Let's see how things progress for you.

I try the whole connecting to different sockets again once the settling in period is... settled.

Re: New build house, no NTE5

Connecting to different sockets if others are still connected is pretty pointless, what you need to do is find the first socket & isolate this from all other extensions. Short term simpy disconnect the wiring(so all you have is the wire from outside connecting to 2 & 5 on the socket), long term, if it shows a difference, fit an NTE5 and filtered faceplate.
